ATHENS, Ohio - Rachel Frederick's third-career double-double boosted the Ohio women's basketball team to a 56-43 win over Miami Wednesday in The Convo. The Bobcats pick up their first conference win of the season and second-straight victory over the RedHawks.
Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bobcats (4-9, 1-1 Mid-American Conference). Ohio limited Miami (5-8, 0-2 MAC) to a 27.7 percent success rate from the floor. The RedHawks, who entered the game with a league-leading 36.4 percent average from the three-point line, shot just 5.6 percent (1-18) from beyond the arc.
Ohio trailed by a bucket at the break, but went on to outscore Miami 27-16 in the second half to pull out the win. Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) was Ohio's leading scorer with 12 points to go with a game-high five assists. Domenica Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit double figures for the second-straight game with 10 points and eight boards.
After falling behind 4-0 to start the game, the Bobcats went on an impressive run that put them in the driver's seat for the first half. Ohio reeled off 13-straight points over a stretch that lasted nearly six minutes. Five different players scored during the sequence and with less than 12 minutes left in the half, Ohio took a commanding 13-4 advantage.
Miami would, though, hit its stride and rally back. Over the next four minutes, the RedHawks outscored the Bobcats 13-3 and with 7:14 left in the half, Miami led by a point, 17-16. From that point on, the game would be tied four times before the end of the half. Miami's Laura Markwood hit a layup in the waning seconds of the period to pull the RedHawks within a bucket, 29-27, a margin that would stand into intermission.
A balanced scoring attack defined Ohio's offensive production in the first half, with seven players lighting up the scoring column. Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) led the way with seven points, while Rachel Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) kicked in a pair of three pointers for six points. Ohio was outrebounded 22-17 in the half, though Frederick had a game-high five boards at the break. Ohio shot 38.5 percent (10-26) from the floor and 50 percent (6-12) from beyond the arc.
Miami's Amber Miller scored her team's first seven points and finished with nine at the half. The RedHawks shot 38.7 percent (12-31) from the floor, but were held empty from the three-point line at 0-for-8.
Ohio took its two-point halftime lead and held onto it for much of the second period. Miami tied the score on several occasions and managed to take a lead as late as the 13:02 mark.
Tied at 35 with 12:16 left in the game, Ohio outscored the RedHawks 21-8 for the remainder of the game to seal the victory.
