ATHENS, Ohio - Anthony Gressick (Lancaster, Ohio) singled three times and a pair of Jon Vondrell (Centerville, Ohio) doubles drove in two, leading Ohio to a 6-5 win over Dayton Tuesday in non-conference baseball at Bob Wren Stadium. With the victory, Ohio completes its 10-game homestand 8-2 and increases its recent string of success to 13 wins in the last 15 games.

Ohio (16-14) led early but the Flyers (22-14) bounced back and led by two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Bobcats rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh inning, however, taking the lead back and keeping it to seal the victory.

?Some teams quit, but we don?t,? said Ohio Head Coach Joe Carbone. ?We kept our poise, kept our heads in the game and a couple guys really came through for us.?

Ohio used five pitchers on the day, with no one hurler throwing more than three innings. Daniel Utts (Circleville, Ohio) (1-0) earned the decision, allowing three runs on four hits for his second collegiate victory. Yale Silverman (Baton Rouge, La.) shut the door in the eighth and ninth and was credited with his team-leading third save.

?Utts needs to get ahead of hitters more, but I thought he had good stuff,? Carbone said. ?Silverman was Silverman. He goes out there and you know you?ve got a chance to win when he?s out there.?

After a quiet first, the Bobcats opened up the scoring in the second inning. Sunday afternoon?s hero Vondrell doubled off the wall in right to score Gressick who singled to lead off the inning. One batter later, Bryant Witt's (Powell, Ohio) groundout to short plated a second run, Phil Sabatini (Oakmont, Pa.), who reached on a walk and advanced on Vondrell?s double.

Ohio lit up the scoreboard again in the third, using another leadoff base hit to plate a run. Dusty Hammond (Bellefontaine, Ohio) singled through the right side and after a pair of retired batters, Gressick punched one through the left side, scoring Hammond and putting Ohio on top 3-0.

Dayton finally broke through in the fifth, hitting its first home run in 11 games. After a leadoff walk by Michael Massa, two-hitter Galen Schumm took a David Moyer (Meadville, Pa.) offering over the wall in right and pulled his club to within one, 3-2, after 4 ?.

In the top of the sixth, the Flyers tied it up and eventually took the lead off Ohio?s fourth pitcher of the evening, Utts. William Benoit led the inning off with a single and came around to score from first one batter later on an RBI double off the wall by Bryan Chandler.

Later in the inning, with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Schumm hurt the Bobcats once again. The second baseman singled to center and plated two runs, putting the Flyers ahead 5-3.

Ohio bounced back in the home half of the sixth and once again it was the Gressick and Vondrell show. Gressick led off with a single and Vondrell drove him in with his second two-bagger of the evening. After six complete, though, Dayton still led by a run, 5-4.

That deficit would disappear in the seventh, however, as the top of the order put the lead back in Ohio?s paws for good. Bryan Buck (Hudson, Ohio) and Hammond both singled to lead off the Ohio seventh and both would come around to score. A groundout to first by Brian Colopy (Columbus, Ohio) scored Buck and tied the game, and then a single to left by Ben Crabtree (Roxbury, Conn.) plated Hammond from second and put Ohio in the lead, 6-5.

From there the game belonged to Silverman. The right-hander came on and struck out two, not allowing a run to cross.

Flyer starter Drew Chesebro pitched to one batter in the seventh before handing the ball off to the Kyle Lindsay in the pen. The right-handed Chesebro surrendered five runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out four. Lindsay (1-1) took the loss for the Flyers, allowing the go-ahead run on three hits in two innings of work.

In addition to Gressick?s three hits, Vondrell and Hammond were the other Bobcats with multiple hits. On the day, eight Ohio batters hit safely at least once, including Crabtree who upped his season-long hitting streak to 11.

Luke Howard (Lebanon, Ohio), Ohio?s starter, allowed no runs on two hits in three innings of work. Two Ohio pitchers?Andrew Shisila (Mentor, Ohio) and Moyer?made their first career appearances on the hill. Shisila lasted 1/3 of an inning, while Moyer allowed just one hit in 1 2/3.

?I thought we beat a very good Dayton team tonight,? Carbone said. ?They?ve got some guys that can really swing the bats.?

Schumm was one of four Flyer hitters to record two base hits on the day, and he drove in three of Dayton?s five runs.

?I thought our pitchers did a very good job,? Carbone said. ?Coach Bill Toadvine pitched their hitters very well. He called good location and I thought the pitchers did what he asked them to do.?

Ohio will now hit the road for the first time in more than two weeks. The Bobcats will travel to Pittsburgh and meet Duquesne Wednesday. First pitch at Duquesne Field is set for 3 p.m. Zeke Isaacs (West Carrollton, Ohio) (0-1) will get the nod for the Bobcats. The Dukes will counter with Keith Meyer (0-1).
