CLEVELAND ? The Kent State Golden Flashes got the best of the Ohio women?s basketball team in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Quarterfinals Wednesday night in Gund Arena, topping the Bobcats 93-74. Ohio finishes the season with a 13-16 overall record and an even 8-8 in conference play.

Ohio?s Simone Redd (Warrensville Heights) tallied 22 points in her homecoming game, while grabbing a team high six rebounds. Lauren Revesz (Bridgeville, Pa.) and Ciara Iglehart (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Golden Flashes opened the game with a 13-6 run before Ohio got going, countering with a 13-6 spurt to even the score, 19-19, at the 12 minute mark. The two teams played each other tight for the remaining of the half with Ohio leading by three, 50-47, heading into the locker room.

Redd, a MAC all-freshman selection and Sixth Man of the Year, led the Bobcats with 16 points at the break, while Melissa DeGrate chipped in 19 of her game-high 31 points in the opening stanza for the Golden Flashes.

The first five minutes of the second half nearly mirrored that of the first stanza, as Kent State went on a 13-2 run to take an eight point lead, 60-52, at 14:39. The Golden Flashes would build an 11 point advantage, 76-65, with six minutes to play, but the Bobcats cut the lead to single digits, 76-68, with 5:30 to play, as Redd hit a three pointer and Kristian Kirkpatrick (Costa Messa, Calif.) and Erin Isbell (Gahanna) added a couple free throws.

Kent State would again push its lead into double figures, going up by as many as 21 with less than 30 second in regulation. The Bobcats would net the last field goal, a jumper by Redd, to end the game, as the Golden Flashes advanced to the semifinals with a 93-74 victory.

The Bobcats shot 41 percent from the field. Iglehart dished out a team-high three assists and Redd came up with a team-best three steals. Freshman Quintana Ward made two key defensive stops for Ohio, blocking Malika Willoughby on a break away in the first half, the only Ohio block of the game, and drawing a charge on DeGrate mid-way through the second.

Kent State, who will play either Marshall or Toledo in the semifinal round Friday, got double-figure scoring efforts from three Golden Flashes including 31 points from DeGrate. The Golden Flashes are now 6-0 versus the Bobcats in the post season.
