KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? The Ohio softball team dropped both games in today?s double-header versus Western Michigan to open Mid-American Conference action. The teams will wrap-up the three-game series Easter Sunday with a single game set to start at 1 p.m.
Western Michigan 4, Ohio 2
Ohio was the first and last to score but the Broncos would pick up four runs in between, scoring twice in the third and sixth innings, to hold off the Bobcats 4-2 in the opening game of MAC play.
Ohio got on the board in the second inning after a scoreless first. Jenny Tisevich was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch and then advanced to second when Emily Futscher grounded out to the second baseman, bringing Robin Miller to the plate. Miller drove the first pitch she saw deep to right field for a standup double, scoring Tisevich.
Nearly the same tale would be told in the top of the seventh as the Bobcats tried to rally from a 4-1 deficit. Miller, the first batter of the inning, was the first to get on base being awarded the pass to first after being hit by a pitch. Marian Davis then walked, and with two on Cathy Walters grounded out to shortstop, advancing the runners on base. Candy Warden, who pinch hit for right fielder Debbie Szalejko, singled to the shortstop, bringing Alicia Catlette home, who had pinch ran for Miller, but the late surge wouldn?t be enough as the Bobcats fell 4-2.
Western Michigan 5, Ohio 0
Despite recording five hits, including three doubles, the Bobcats dropped their second of the day 5-0. The Broncos? nine hits forced Ohio to go deep into its bullpen, as the Bobcats used three pitchers. Western Michigan put runs on the scoreboard in the first, second, and fifth innings and scored twice in the sixth, highlighted by a walk off homerun by Vanderslik.
The Bobcats, now 11-17 overall, wrap-up the three-game set with Western Michigan tomorrow at 1 p.m. and then return to Athens for their first home game of the season Wednesday at the Ohio Softball Field versus Central Michigan. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
