BOWLING GREEN, Ohio ? The Bowling Green Falcons prevailed over the Ohio women?s basketball team, 86-59, in the Mid-American Conference Game of the Week Saturday afternoon. Ali Mann and Liz Honegger posted double-doubles to help Bowling Green improve to 7-2 in MAC play, while the Bobcats fall to 5-4.
The Bobcats, who won the opening tip-off, would exchange buckets with the Falcons for the first nine minutes of play, before Bowling Green took a 14 point lead, 26-12, with a 15-2 run at 10:15.
Ohio responded with a 13-4 run to close the gap to five points, 30-25, over the next seven minutes, led by a five point effort by Erin Isbell. The Falcons? Mann and Honegger combined for seven points to push Bowling Green?s lead back into double-digits, 37-27, at 3:06.
Carin Horne broke a two minute scoreless stretch by both teams, driving to the basket for two points and then draining two free throws after drawing a foul, to give the Falcons a 12 point cushion, 41-29, heading into the locker rooms.
Mann and Honegger led the field in scoring at the break with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Falcons, who shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent from the free throw line, out rebounded Ohio 26-19 in the opening frame.
The Bobcats, who shot 38.7 percent from the floor, was led by Erin Isbell (Gahanna, Ohio), who tallied nine points and five rebounds. Kristian Kirkpatrick (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Andrea Johnson (Columbus, Ohio) also added six points apiece.
The opening four and half minutes of the second half saw five fouls, three from Ohio?s Kirkpatrick, who fouled out of the game at the 17 minute mark, as the Falcons maintained a 12 point lead, 49-37, at 15:54.
The Bobcats cut the deficit to as few as seven with a 7-2 spurt at 12:04, 51-44. Ohio got five points from its bench in Tiffany Byrd (Columbus, Ohio) and Simone Redd (Warrensville Hts., Ohio), while Johnson also added two points in the run.
Freshman Kate Achter rattled off five straight points, all coming from the free throw line, to put the Falcons back up by double-digits, 56-44, at 11:05. Bowling Green continued to roll, outscoring the Bobcats 12-3 to gain a 21 point lead, 68-47, at 7:27.
The Falcons made it a 25 point game, 81-56, with under three minutes remaining in regulation, getting points from Honegger, Achter and Jill Louse.
Bowling Green outscored the Bobcats, 5-3, in the remaining two minutes to go on to win 86-59.
The Falcons, who shot 42.6 (29-68) percent from the floor and 64.9 (24-37) percent from the line for the game, had four players score in double-digits. Mann led all scorers with 19 points, while Achter added 17 (13 coming in the second half), Honegger chipped in 15 and Horne had 12. Bowling Green out-rebounded the Bobcats 55-37 and forced 24 turnovers. Honegger dominated the boards collecting a game-high 12 rebounds and Mann grabbed 10 boards to lead the Falcons.
Three Bobcats scored in double-figures, while shooting 34.5 percent from the field. Johnson netted a team-high 14 points, with Isbell and Redd adding 13 and 10, respectively.
Isbell pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and came up with two blocks. Isbell is now two rebounds away from moving into fourth place on Ohio?s all-time career rebounding list, she currently has 691 rebounds.
Ohio returns home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the Marshall Thundering Herd, before hitting the road again for a game at Toledo, Saturday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
