Final Stats
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Rachel Frederick recorded a double-double, Katie Reihmann hit five three-pointers for the second-straight game and the Bobcats led at the half, but UNC-Wilmington rallied back to defeat the Ohio women's basketball team 60-55 Sunday in the Trask Coliseum.
Ohio (2-7) went to the break with a 24-19 lead, but was outscored 41-31 in the second half by the Seahawks (5-2). UNC-Wilmington used 13 second-half points from Stephanie Fernald to seal the home victory.
Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) notched her second double-double of the season Sunday, posting a dozen points and 10 boards for the Cats. Reihmann (Marengo, Iowa), who has emerged as one of the premier sharp-shooters in the Mid-American Conference, knocked down 5-of-8 three-point attempts and totaled 15 points. Reihmann has hit 10 three-pointers over the last two games.
Simone Redd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio) registered 12 points and chipped in six assists and two steals for the Bobcats.
With a five-point lead in its pocket at the half, Ohio increased its advantage to seven via a Reihmann triple at the 15:39 mark of the second half. Ohio would not score another point, though, until more than nine minutes later. Redd hit a jumper with 6:36 on the clock to end the drought, but by that time the Seahawks had run off 14-straight points and now led by five. The margin increased to 11 on two occasions and UNC-Wilmington scored its last 15 points from the free-throw line to preserve the victory.
A solid defensive effort gave Ohio its early lead in the first half. The Bobcats held UNC-Wilmington to just 22.2 percent (6-of-27) shooting from the floor and 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from behind the arc in the first half. The Bobcats, though, hit 45 percent (9-of-20) of their attempts from the field in the half and converted 4-of-8 (50 percent) three-point tries. Redd scored 10 first-half points and the Bobcats had just one fewer rebound (17-16).
The second-half drought, however, spelled Ohio's demise Sunday. UNC-Wilmington heated up on the offensive end in the second stanza, knocking down 42.9 percent (9-of-21) of its tries from the floor.
The Bobcats were outrebounded 39-29 Sunday, but Ohio did outscore the Seahawks in the paint, 20-12. The Bobcats got more production from their bench (19-16), but UNC-Wilmington was able to score 14 points off 23 Ohio turnovers.
UNC-Wilmington was led by Fernald, who finished the game with 20 points and a pair of steals. Sahsha Taylor matched Frederick's double-double with 12 points and 12 boards in the win.
Ohio stays on the road for one more in this three-game road trip. The Bobcats will return to the Buckeye State and take on Cleveland State Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Henry J. Goodman Arena.
