GUILDERLAND CENTER, N.Y. - The Ohio wrestling team won three of its four dual meets Saturday at the third annual Journeymen/Brute Northeast Collegiate Duals at Guilderland Center High School.
The Bobcats began the day with a 48-6 victory over Binghamton, followed by a 24-12 win against Drexel. Ohio then dropped a 37-3 decision to Pitt-Johnstown before finishing the 10-team event with a 28-12 victory over Sacred Heart.
Against Binghamton, sophomore Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio) got things started for the Bobcats with a pin at 125 pounds. Ohio then forfeited the 133-pound match but got the points right back with a forfeit at 141. Junior 149-pounder Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio), 157-pound redshirt freshman Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio), 165-pound true freshman Kent Smith (Bowling Green, Ohio), 174-pound sophomore Ryan Knapp (McConnelsville, Ohio) and 184-pound junior Brian Cesear (Amherst, Ohio) all won their matches before 197-pound junior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) and junior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) both won by forfeit.
Gomoll, Frerichs, Cesear, Terbay and Adelman were also victorious against Drexel, along with 141-pound sophomore Frank Brown (Westerville, Ohio) and junior 165-pounder Vinny DiGiovanni (Solon, Ohio).
In the afternoon, the Bobcats did not fare well against Pitt-Johnstown, currently ranked third nationally in Division II. Ohio's only win came at 184 pounds, where Cesear scored a decision over Mike Corcetti, the top-ranked Division II grappler at that weight.
To finish off the day, the Bobcats received wins from redshirt freshman Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) at 141 pounds, Gomoll, Frerichs, DiGiovanni, Knapp, Cesear and Terbay. Going against Sacred Heart's Payam Zarrinpour, the eighth-ranked heavyweight in the country, Adelman had to injury default after hurting his leg.
"I thought we wrestled pretty well in three of our meets today," said Ohio head coach Joel Greenlee. "Against Pitt-Johnstown, we were horrible and made them look good. And then Adelman's injury in the last match of the day really puts us in a bind if he's going to be out for a while."
Next up for the Bobcats is the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas on Dec. 2-3.
