SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Competing without three of its starters, the Ohio wrestling team suffered two close losses in the Slippery Rock Duals on Friday.
At the Morrow Field House in Slippery Rock, Pa., the Bobcats (3-3) lost 22-15 to East Stroudsburg and 22-20 to host Slippery Rock.
Against East Stroudsburg (3-2), Ohio lost the first four matches before junior co-captain Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio) scored a 13-3 major decision over Sean Close at 149 pounds. Redshirt freshman Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) followed that up with a 10-8 victory over Mark Smith at 157 pounds but the Bobcats would not win again until the final two matches.
At 184, junior co-captain Brian Cesear (Amherst, Ohio) recorded a 23-8 technical fall over Sean McCracken. Redshirt freshman Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) then capped the meet with a 10-3 win over Charles Deighton.
Sophomore 125-pounder Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio) gave Ohio an early 6-3 lead against Slippery Rock by pinning Chris Clarke at the 2:45 mark. Following losses at 133 and 141, Gomoll pulled the Bobcats to within three points with a 5-1 decision against Chuck Wiltrout.
Frerichs then gave Ohio a 15-12 lead by pinning Gary Price just 1:06 into the 157-pound match but Slippery Rock (3-4) took a commanding 22-15 advantage by winning the next three bouts. Bobcat junior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) closed out the event with a 15-0 technical fall over Andrew Joseph.
Ohio's next competition will be a Dec. 18 dual meet against Findlay. The Bobcats will host the noon event at Lakota East High School in West Chester, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati.
