GREENSBORO, N.C. - Rachel Frederick posted her first-career double-double with 27 points and 12 boards, but the Ohio women's basketball team was defeated in overtime, 71-68, by East Carolina Friday in the first game of the UNC-Greensboro Thanksgiving Tournament.
Ohio (1-3) matched the Pirates (1-1) shot-for-shot through the first two halves of regulation, going to the half tied at 30 and into overtime knotted at 63. East Carolina used a pair of free throws to go up by three with 17 seconds remaining in overtime. The Bobcats had two more possessions in the closing seconds, but couldn't tie the score.
Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.), who scored 22 points in her Bobcat debut, had a breakout game Friday, recording 27 points and 12 boards, both career-highs. The true freshman shot 8-of-11 from the floor, 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. She also chipped in four steals and four assists.
Katie Reihmann (Marengo, Iowa) provided a big spark off the bench for the Cats. Reihmann converted four of her six attempts from three-point range, kicking in 12 points in 23 minutes. Lauren Revesz (Bridgeville, Pa.), inserted back into the starting lineup, scored 11 points before fouling out.
The Bobcats led by a bucket with less than a minute left in regulation, 63-61. East Carolina's Jessica Slack responded, knocking down a jumper to tie the score and send it into overtime. Both teams traded five-point runs in overtime and the score was again tied, this time 68-68, with under 60 seconds left. Impris Manning put the Pirates up by one with a free throw, then made a steal and was fouled, converting both free throws to put her club up 71-68.
Ohio shot 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from behind the arc and 72.7 percent from the stripe in the first half, while limiting the Pirates to 28.6 percent shooting in the frame. Frederick had 11 points by the break, and the Bobcats outrebounded East Carolina 26-17 in a back-and-forth struggle.
For the game, Ohio outrebounded East Carolina 49-41, hit 45.5 percent of its shots from the floor and 47.1 of its attempts from behind the arc. The Pirates took advantage of 32 Ohio turnovers, though, scoring 24 points off Ohio miscues. The Pirates scored twice as many points as Ohio in the paint (32-16) and got 10 more points from its bench (30-20).
Cherie Mills led East Carolina with 21 points.
Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) pulled down nine boards for Ohio, while Simone Redd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio) recorded eight rebounds. Eight Bobcats entered the scoring column and all nine Ohio players that appeared recorded at least one rebound.
The Bobcats are set to take on host-UNC-Greensboro Saturday at 1 p.m. in day two of the Thanksgiving Tournament. The Spartans dropped a 69-66 decision to Longwood in the opener Friday.
