ATHENS, Ohio - Led by a team-high 16 from Rachel Frederick and Ciara Iglehart, five players reached double digits in scoring to lift the Ohio women's basketball team to an 83-61 win over West Liberty State Saturday in exhibition play in the Convocation Center.
In addition to Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Iglehart (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Lauren Revesz (Bridgeville, Pa.), Simone Redd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio) and KeyAuna Jenkins (Cleveland, Ohio) each reached double figures in the exhibition win.
Jenkins finished two rebounds shy of a double-double in her Bobcat debut to lead a heavy paint attack for Ohio. The Bobcats scored 48 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 44-28.
Ohio took a 12-point lead into the break, then outscored West Liberty State 40-30 in the second frame to come out on top.
The Bobcats came out of the gates hot on the offensive end and didn't cool down, taking a 43-31 lead into intermission.
For the first half, Ohio shot 51.4 percent from the floor (19-37) and better than 71 percent from the charity stripe (5-7). Redd went 4-for-6 from the floor for eight points in the first frame, Frederick knocked down all three of her shot attempts for nine points and Revesz led the way with a dozen.
The Hilltoppers were paced by 15 first-half points from guard Brandy Terry, who hit three three-pointers in the half.
Ohio scored 14 second-chance points and 74.4 percent of its scoring came in the paint. The Bobcats out-rebounded West Liberty State 22-14 and the Bobcat defense limited the Hilltoppers to just 38.5 percent shooting from the floor.
Out of the locker room, Jenkins came alive. Finishing the first half with three boards, three points and four minutes, Jenkins came out on fire in the second frame. She scored 11 points and nabbed five boards in ten second-half minutes.
In the second half, Ohio went 2-for-3 from behind the arc and shot 46.9 percent from the floor.
For teh game, the Bobcats forced 22 Hilltopper turnovers, blocked two shots--both by Jenkins--and made 10 steals.
Point guard Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) chipped in seven points, dishing out four assists and adding three steals.
Terry led the way for West Liberty State with a game-high 21 in the defeat. Leighann Fry kicked in 15.
The Bobcats will officially kick-off the regular season next week at the Fifth-Third Marshall University Classic. Ohio is slated to meet South Carolina State in the first game of a two-day affair. Tip-time is set for 5 p.m. in Huntington's Cam Henderson Center.
