AKRON, Ohio - The 2005 season came to an unmerciful end for the Ohio women's soccer team as the Bobcats lost 3-0 to Akron in a Mid-American Conference match Friday evening at Lee Jackson Field.
The Zips (5-11-2, 3-7-1 MAC) scored less than three minutes into the game when Amee Thompson assisted Jessica Fix's first collegiate goal. They added insurance goals in the 35th and 76th minutes by Donna Swift and Abby Holzworth, respectively, to secure their first-ever victory against Ohio (3-14-0, 1-10-0 MAC) in five tries.
For the match, Akron held a 7-3 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Zips goalkeepers Krystin Wilson and Lauren Graff combined for the shutout while redshirt freshman Katie Overmann (Batavia, Ohio) made a pair of saves playing the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Bobcats.
Senior midfielder Holly Hinman (Madison, Wis.), junior forward Tiffany Horvath (Strongsville, Ohio) and freshman midfielder Kate Fledderjohn (Fairfield, Ohio) led the Ohio attack with a shot apiece.
Both squads failed to qualify for the eight-team MAC Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal matches at the top four seeds on Tuesday. With a 3-2 win at Toledo on Friday, Bowling Green (13-6-0, 9-2-0 MAC) claimed the MAC regular-season crown and the tournament's top seed.
