KENT, Ohio - After 61 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Kent State's Liz Fettrow found the net off a penalty corner, providing the game's lone goal and lifting the Golden Flashes to a 1-0 victory over Ohio Sunday in Mid-American Conference action at the KSU Field Hockey Complex.
With 8:51 remaining in the game, Melanie Bierens de Hann passed to Fettrow and the junior slipped the ball past the Ohio (8-9, 6-3 MAC) defense for the only score of the afternoon.
"We played well," said Ohio Head Coach Neil Macmillan. "By scoring their goal that late--with about nine minutes left--it's difficult to get back and correct everything."
Ohio goaltender Jennifer Cote (Raynham, Mass.) made two saves in a game dominated by defense. The Golden Flashes scored on one of their four shots on goal, while the Bobcats were shutout by Kent State's Linz Markwart on two shots on goal.
The Bobcats took seven shots in the first half and were credited with three penalty corners, but could not find the back of the net. Ohio out-shot Kent State (6-12, 6-2 MAC) again in the second half (5-3) and were awarded two more penalty corners (4-2). Lindsay Rothenberger (Fleetwood, Pa.) and Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) accounted for both of Ohio's shots on goal.
"I thought we really had control of the game," Macmillan said. "Our passing was crisp and our defense played well. We just weren't able to finish from 25 yards in."
The Golden Flashes have won six straight and now equal Ohio's conference-best six MAC wins. The Bobcats have one conference game remaining on the schedule (at Central Michigan), while Kent State will finish up the regular season with dates at Ball State and Central Michigan, with the conference title on the line.
"They're a good, solid team. They have some good skill players," Macmillan said. "But it's just disappointing when you have a good performance and still don't end up on the right side of the result."
Ohio now moves into the final weekend of the regular season, with the MAC Tournament looming in less than two weeks. The Bobcats will battle Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant at 11am in the MAC regular season finale on Saturday. Ohio will finish up the regular season in East Lansing against No. 15 Michigan State Sunday at 2 p.m.
