PITTSBURGH ? The Duquesne Dukes stopped the Ohio women?s basketball team?s two game winning streak, extending its unbeaten streak at home to four, as they prevailed over the Bobcats, 88-80. Freshman Lauren Revesz (Bridgeville, Pa.) led the Bobcats with a season-high 18 points, while Senior Erin Isbell held a team-leading 10 rebounds.
Duquesne used an early 8-0 run to go up 11-4 at 15:09. The teams traded baskets as the Bobcats battled back closing the gap to eight points, 18-10, at 12:19. Ohio took the lead at 7:05 going up by one, 25-24, with a 7-0 run capped by a Revesz three-pointer. The Dukes quickly regained the lead off a couple of jumpers from Jocelyn Chandler and Aiga Bautre. The Bobcats retaliated as Kristian Kirkpatrick (Costa Mesa, Calif.) hit two jumpers to bring Ohio within one and then Ciara Iglehart (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added a layup to put the Bobcats up 31-30 with a minute to play. Baurte connected on two late free throws to give Duquesne a 32-31 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw eight ties and lead changes in a closely fought battle. The Bobcats, who led for the first six minutes, took a four point, 44-40, at 14:42. The Dukes held a short lived lead 14:37, 49-48, but Ohio?s Kirkpatrick put the Bobcats back on top with a layup and one coming out of a Ohio time-out. Duquesne and Ohio exchanged the lead over the next four minutes but the Bobcats went on a 7-2 run to give them their largest lead of the half, 64-59 at 10:25. After narrowing the margin to one, Duquesne and Ohio again went nearly bucket-for-bucket before the Dukes took the lead for good with 3:11 to play. Duquesne jumped out to an eight point lead on a 12-4 run with seconds to go. Ohio?s Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) scored a lay-up, assisted by Lindsay Wight (Wayensville, Ohio), but the late bucket wouldn?t be enough. Duquesne?s Rebecca Bonasso made two free throws with one second on the clock, to clinch the New Years Eve victory.
The Bobcats shot a season-high 47.8 percent from the floor, while committing a team-low 12 turnovers. Revesz was joined by four other teammates in double digit scoring as Kirkpatrick added 16, Ward with 12, Tiffany Byrd (Columbus, Ohio) chipped in 11, and Wight had 10. Kirkpatrick, Isbell and Ward combined for a five blocked shots, with Kirkpatrick?s two a new career-high. Ward dished out a season-high nine of the teams 25 assists.
Ohio will return to action Jan. 5 as it hosts Kent State to open up Mid-American Conference play. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
