GREENSBORO, N.C. - A bases-clearing triple broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning and allowed UNC-Greensboro to complete a doubleheader-sweep over the visiting Ohio baseball team Sunday. The Bobcats fell 10-4 in the first game and 4-2 in the nightcap.

With the losses, Ohio fell to 0-3 on the season while the Spartans improved to 8-0. It is the best start in UNC-Greensboro's history.

The Bobcats received six strong innings from junior pitcher Chris Bova (Reynoldsburg) in the second game Sunday. Bova, who retired the first five batters of the game, allowed just one run and four hits while striking out six Spartan batters.

Ohio gave Bova a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Tony Gandee (Akron) drove in a run with a ground out after back-to-back doubles by Omari Briscoe (Mississauga, Ontario) and Brian White (Frankfort).

UNC-Greensboro knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth on a bases-loaded wild pitch with two outs and took the lead for good in the seventh inning. Freshman Anthony Gressick (Lancaster) took the loss for Ohio and Patrick Currin allowed one run in three innings to pick up his first win in relief for the Spartans.

The Bobcats didn't go down without a fight, however. Brandon Wheeler (London) opened the Ohio eighth with a single to right field and moved to second on a base hit by Gandee. Wheeler moved to third on a fly out and came in to score when Dan Lunsford (Mansfield) singled to right. But that's all the Bobcats would get as reliever Chris Mason retired the next two batters to escape further damage.

Briscoe singled with two outs in the ninth inning but failed to score.

Senior Walt Novosel (West Middlesex, Pa.) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings in the first game. Scooter Michael, who allowed three runs in 5.2 innings, picked up his second win of the season for UNC-Greensboro.

Lunsford and Rob Shrawder (Milton, Pa.) each homered to pace the Ohio attack. Unfortunately, both homers led off innings - Shrawder went deep to start the sixth and Lunsford left the yard to begin the seventh.

Lunsford's blast pulled the Bobcats to within three runs at 7-4 but the Spartans responded with one run in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth to seal the victory.

The Bobcats will next play at Louisville Tuesday at 3 p.m.
