2003-04 Statistics DeLAND, Fla. ? Paced by three players in double figures, including 21 points from senior Latreece Bagley, the Ohio women's basketball team defeated Central Connecticut State 76-56 Saturday to win the Hatter Classic at the Edmunds Center on the campus of Stetson University.
The Bobcats (4-2) would never trail in the contest, as Ohio would use baskets from Bagley and fellow senior Candace Bates to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. The Blue Devils (2-4) would keep it close, pulling within one basket of the Bobcats on three occasions early in the half before Ohio used a 9-1 run over a three-minute span to open a double digit lead with just over five minutes left to play. Despite being outscored 8-4 through the end of the half, the Bobcats would take a 29-22 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, Ohio would maintain a comfortable advantage, never leading by less than five points the rest of the way. The Bobcats would put the game away, building a double digit lead with runs of 10-3 and 17-5 in the middle portion of the second frame. With the score at 62-45 with 5:56 remaining, Ohio would outscore the Blue Devils 14-11 through the end of the contest to take home a 76-56 decision.
Bagley?s 21 points led all players and tied a career-high, which she set on Friday night against Delaware State. For her efforts in the two-day event, she was named tournament MVP. Bates and junior Elizabeth Brown each chipped in 14 points for the Bobcats, while Brown pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, earning her a spot on the all-tournament team. Senior Andrea Gay had a season-high five assists and freshman Angel Hornsburger had a personal-best three steals for the third consecutive contest. Central had two players in double figures, led by Nikki Mercer, who had 14 points.
Ohio returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 13, when it welcomes the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament champion and NCAA tournament participant Austin Peay Lady Govs. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
