LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky?s backup quarterback Shane Boyd ran for two scores, threw for one and caught a touchdown reception as the Wildcats defeated the Ohio football team 35-14 Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium.

Austen Everson played the entire game at quarterback for the Bobcats and went 10-for-18 for a 147 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The true freshman from Brentwood, Tenn., also carried the ball 21 times for 28 yards.

Ohio (2-5) struck early when linebacker Pete Brately sacked Jared Lorenzen and caused a fumble that was recovered by Tyler Russ at Kentucky?s 7-yard line. Running back Brad Young then scored on the Bobcats? first play with a seven yard run to make it 7-0 with 10:28 left in the first quarter.

Neither team managed much offense after that until a Matt Miller punt was partially blocked in the second quarter and the Wildcats took possession at Ohio?s 27. Boyd, replacing Lorenzen as Kentucky?s signal caller, capped a six-play drive with an eight-yard touchdown run with 8:18 remaining in the first half.

The score remained tied at 7-7 until early in the third quarter when Boyd converted an Everson sack and fumble into a 12-yard touchdown run on the Wildcats? first play of the second half.

On Kentucky?s next possession, Boyd found Tommy Cook for a 42-yard score and a 21-7 lead with 9:29 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats threatened on the ensuing possession, driving 79 yards to the Wildcat 1-yard line. On 4th-and-goal, however, Everson was stopped short of the goal line.

Ohio found the end zone on its next possession, though, when Ray Huston made a spectacular leaping catch over the middle and managed to stay on his feet until crossing the goal line. The 58-yard strike from Everson pulled the Bobcats to within 21-14 at the 11:54 mark of the fourth quarter.

Lorenzen then resumed quarterback duties for Kentucky and threw scoring passes to Boyd and Derek Abney. Ohio?s final two drives, meanwhile, ended on turnovers with Everson being sacked and losing his second fumble of the game and then throwing his first career interception.

The Bobcats return to Mid-American Conference action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Buffalo. Ohio then returns to Peden Stadium on Nov. 8 to face Kent State.
