Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ohio had seven hits, including a three-for-four afternoon from senior Mike Arbinger (Toledo), but the Bobcats allowed five first-inning runs and were never able to recover in a 16-2 loss to UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-2 on the young season.
The Bobcats' offense was much more productive in its second outing, following an opener on Saturday in which they managed just one hit. Sophomore Adam Fox (St. Mary's, Pa.) got Ohio off to a better offensive start with a first-inning double, and the Bobcats continued in the second inning with three hits and their first two runs of the season. Freshman Ben Crabtree (Roxbury, Conn.) collected his first career hit with a double, and Arbinger then plated left fielder Brian White (Frankfort) with a single one batter later. Second baseman Jason Shockey (LaVista, Neb.) scored Crabtree with a single of his own, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the Bobcats' second with a 5-2 deficit.
UNC Greensboro (5-2) jumped all over Ohio starter Walt Novosel (Pulaski, Pa.) in the first inning. The Spartans, who totaled 10 hits in the series opener on Saturday, took advantage of some wildness by Novosel, converting a single, walk and two hit batsmen into their first run. A bases-loaded triple by Jesse Martin made the score 4-0, and a run-scoring double by Justin Lee gave UNCG its five-run lead.
The Spartans tacked on a run in the second inning, followed by four tallies in the fifth and six in the sixth against the Ohio bullpen to turn the game into a blowout. The Bobcats' offense picked up single hits in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings, but Ohio was unable to piece any sufficient rallies together.
Senior Greg Meyer (Cincinnati) had his second pinch hit in as many games on Sunday, lacing a sixth-inning single.
Four UNC Greensboro players had two hits apiece as the Spartans pounded out 15 hits, including five of the extra-base variety. Kirk Strebin had a pair of doubles for UNCG.
Ohio (0-2) is slated to open a 17-game home stand this coming Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium as it hosts Dartmouth. The doubleheader between the Bobcats and Big Green, the first two games of a three-game weekend series, will start at 12 noon.
