Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Greg Meyer (Cincinnati) had a pinch-hit double in the top of the eighth inning to ruin a no-hit bid by UNC Greensboro, but the host Spartans pounded out 10 hits of their own en route to a 9-0 win on Saturday afternoon. Ohio fell to 0-1, while UNCG improved to 4-2.
UNC Greensboro starter Ryan Gordon threw seven no-hit innings, inducing 12 groundball outs while striking out three Bobcats. He retired each of the first 11 Ohio hitters before the Bobcats' Adam Fox (St. Mary's, Pa.) walked in the fourth.
With one out in the eighth, Meyer batted for catcher Ben Crabtree (Roxbury, Conn.), lacing a double to left-center field against reliever Chris Cloninger to break up the no-no bid. However, a strike out and a groundout thwarted Ohio's lone scoring opportunity on the afternoon.
Sophomore Marc Cornell (Columbus) pitched well for Ohio in his season debut, striking out seven and allowing seven hits in six innings of work. He surrendered five runs, of which only two were earned. Corey Lyles (Marion) and Matt Cochrell (Galion) pitched one inning of relief each, with each collecting one strikeout and one walk.
Three players had two hits apiece for UNC Greensboro, which defeated Ohio for the third time in five head-to-head meetings. The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Ohio is expected to start left-hander Walt Novosel (Pulaski, Pa.), while the host Spartans will counter with either Aaron Horne or Everett Hancock. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
