Ohio Wrestling Finishes Regular Season Strong With Victory At Gardner-Webb


BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- The Ohio wrestling team (8-6) finished the 2018-19 regular season strong, picking up a 31-15 road win over host Gardner-Webb (3-12) today at Paul Porter Arena.

The Bobcats finished the regular season with a 4-3 record in non-conference dual meets.

With the match beginning at 133 pounds, Gardner-Webb grabbed a 6-0 lead when redshirt freshman Brandon Bright won by forfeit.

The Bobcats answered with three-straight wins to take a 13-6 lead, however. Senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) picked up a 20-6 win by major decision over freshman Blake Mulkey at 141 to put Ohio on the board. Redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) gave the Bobcats a 10-6 lead thanks to a win by fall in 4:37 over freshman Chase McKinney at 149. Redshirt junior Kade Kowalski (Nashport, Ohio) provided Ohio with three more points with a 4-2 win by sudden victory over sophomore Evan Schenk at 157.

The Runnin' Bulldogs countered with wins at 165 and 174 to cut the Ohio lead to one point. Redshirt senior Tyler Marinelli earned a 3-2 win by decision at 165, and freshman Kyle Homet followed with a 10-7 win by decision at 174.

Junior Hunter Yeargan (Willard, Mo.) extended the Ohio lead to seven points, though, delivering a win by fall in 1:59 over freshman Christian Salter at 184.

Gardner-Webb trimmed the Ohio edge back to four points when sophomore Anthony Perrine logged a 3-2 win by decision at 197, but sophomore Aaron Naples (Brunswick, Ohio) made it a 25-15 advantage for the Bobcats when he recorded a win by fall in 1:27 over redshirt freshman Gabriel Pickett at 285. Ohio made the score final at 31-15 when redshirt sophomore Trevor Giallombardo (Petoskey, Mich.) was credited with a win by forfeit at 125.

With the regular season in the books, Ohio will compete in the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held March 8-9 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.
