Ohio Wrestling Honors Seniors Before Dual with Old Dominion

ATHENS, Ohio –  The Ohio Wrestling team (4-6, 3-2 MAC) hosted Mid-American Conference rival Old Dominion (8-8, 4-2 MAC) on Sunday (Feb. 11) the dual was canceled after the 165-weight class due to a medical incident. The match will not be made up.

The Bobcats started the match celebrating five Ohio seniors. Ohio honored Cullen CummingsNoah ForriderGabe DzuroThomas Williams and Zak Hassan.

125 – Trevor Giallombardo vs. Michael McGee
Ohio redshirt freshman Trevor Giallombardo (Gaylord, Mich.) took on Old Dominion's Michael McGee at 125-pounds. McGee controlled the match from the start when he hit a takedown just 20-seconds in and built a 16-4 major decision mostly taking down Giallombardo and letting him up. In the first, McGee hit two takedowns while he hit a reversal in the second to lead 6-1. In the third McGee let Giallombardo up from the opening position and had three takedowns and a two-point near fall in the third.

133 – Cameron Kelly vs. Caleb Richardson
Ohio junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) suffered a 5-2 decision loss to Old Dominion's Caleb Richardson. The match started with a lot of energy, with both guys battling to score first. Richardson hit the first takedown to lead 2-0 early on, but Kelly responded with an escape to lessen his lead to 2-1 before the second period. Kelly escaped again to start the second period, bringing all scores to 2-2. Richardson escaped starting the third period, regaining the lead at 3-2. Richardson earned a final takedown in the last 30 seconds of the match to take a 5-2 lead and a decision win.

141 – Mario Guillen vs. Alex Madrigal
Ohio redshirt freshman Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) battled ODU's Alex Madrigal at 141-pounds. Madrigal was able to pick up a 2-1 advantage in the first after a takedown and Guillen escape. In the second, Guillen evened the score after an escape and held a tied match going into the third, 2-2. In the third Madrigal was able to take Guillen down around the one-minute mark and held the position the rest of the match to take a 6-2 decision.

149 – Kade Kowalski vs. Kenan Carter
Redshirt sophomore Kade Kowalski (Nashport, Ohio) earned Ohio's first win on the day with an exciting 5-1 decision victory over ODU's Kenan Carter. The first two periods saw a lot of action between the two, but they would go scoreless. In the final period, Carter escaped to-start the third, putting points on the board first to lead 1-0. Kowalski avoided a takedown by Carter and then acted quickly at the end of the period, hitting a takedown to lead 2-1 before adding to his lead with a two-point near fall in the final seconds of the match to take a 5-1 win with an added point for riding time.

157 – Cullen Cummings vs. Larry Early
Ohio redshirt senior Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.) came out fast against Old Dominion's Larry Early. Cummings ended up with his choice of position because Early got called for an illegal substance on his skin using that to score a point on an escape. Early landed an escape to open the second then landed a two-point takedown to take a 3-1 lead. Early was able to hold Cummings down the entire third period to claim a 4-1 decision. 

165 – Joe Terry vs. Luke Drugac
Redshirt freshman Joe Terry (Pickerington, Ohio) earned a 7-6 decision victory for the Bobcats in the 165-class over ODU's Luke Drugac. After the first period went scoreless, Terry hit a big reversal to start the second period to lead 2-0 before Drugac quickly escaped to put scores on the board at 2-1. Terry hit another takedown to increase his lead to 4-1 before Drugac escaped to give Terry a 4-2 lead going into the final period. Drugac escaped once again to start the third, lessening Terry's lead to 4-3 before hitting a takedown of his own to take the lead for the first time at 5-4. Terry escaped to tie up the scores again at 5-5 in the final 30 seconds of the match. Terry took control of the match and recorded a takedown with less than 10 seconds on the clock, to lead 7-5. Drugac escaped before the match was over, but it wouldn't be enough to stifle Terry's 7-6 decision victory.
