Brian Metz returned to Ohio University in February 2020 after being named the program’s tight ends coach. Metz added the responsibilities of Recruiting Coordinator prior to the 2023 season. At the conclusion of the 2021 regular season, Metz was named an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 honoree, as announced by the AFCA.

2023 was a historic season for the Bobcats, marking the first time in program history the team recorded back-to-back nine-win regular seasons. With the addition of the 41-21 victory over Georgia Southern in the 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl, the team recorded consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time as well.

Throughout his tenure in Athens Metz has mentored a number of highly productive Bobcats. Tight End Tyler Foster had four receiving touchdowns in 2022, most notably the game-winning overtime grab to seal the Barstool Arizona Bowl win over Wyoming. And Athens-native and former walk-on tight end Ryan Luehrman capped off his stellar career in Green and White in 2021 tallying 31 career starts (most ever by a TE at Ohio), 57 receptions (3rd all-time for TE), 634 receiving yards (3rd all-time for TE), and 7 TDs (2nd all-time for a TE).

Metz has also coached the Ohio kickoff return unit since 2020 during which time the Bobcats have returned four kickoffs for touchdowns. Three different returners have been named MAC Special Teams Player of the Week (De’Montre Tuggle, Julian Ross, and Keegan Wilburn). And in 2022, Wilburn was named First Team All-MAC Specialist.

From 2016-2018 Metz worked as an offensive graduate assistant coaching the Ohio wide receivers. He coached five 1,000+ yard career receivers including 2019 NFL free agent Papi White who completed his time at Ohio with 3,090 all-purpose yards, 25 touchdowns, and a school record in career receiving yards (2,620). During the 2013-2014 seasons Metz served the Ohio program as an intern working with the quarterbacks and recruiting operations.

Metz has enjoyed two separate sabbatical seasons away from Athens. At the University of Memphis Metz was as an offensive intern in 2015 working with a wide receiver group that included four future NFL players at the position (Tony Pollard, Anthony Miller, Mose Frazier, and Tevin Jones). In 2019, Metz worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas working with the Rebels’ quarterbacks. At UNLV he coached future Ohio Bobcat Armani Rogers as he set a UNLV record for career rushing yards by a quarterback (1,549).

Metz earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2013. As a student Metz worked as an equipment manager with the Fighting Irish quarterbacks and also coached football at St. Joseph High School. Metz earned his Master of Business Administration (2015), Master of Sports Administration (2015), and Master of Coaching Education (2018) degrees from Ohio University. In January 2022 he was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s 35 Under 35 Leadership Institute. Metz met his wife Lindsae, who is also an Ohio University alum, in Athens.Â
