AMHERST, Mass – The Ohio field hockey team (2-4, 0-1 MAC) returned to action on Friday (Sept. 17) to face off against No. 6 UMass (7-0, 1-0 MAC) in their Mid-American Conference opener, falling by a score of 6-0.

Overall, UMass outshot Ohio 32-8. The Minutewomen tallied 14 shots on goal while the Bobcats got three shots on goal. Ohio made eight saves throughout the contest while UMass registered three. UMass also took 11 penalty corners compared to Ohio's five.

Individually, junior back Deborah James (Hertfordshire, England) was a threat for Ohio, registering four shots on the day and two shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Maddie Hill (Perth, Australia) tallied one shot and one shot on goal. Sophomores Iona Roderick (Cardiff, United Kingdom) and Tiana Nhamoinesu (Thirsk, North Yorkshire) each recorded a shot along with junior Ava Hershberger (Harrison City, Pa.)

In goal, junior Molly Schreiner (State College, Pa.) recorded eight saves and allowed six goals in a full 60 minutes of action.

UMass put pressure on the Ohio defense from the jump, getting early shots before a chance on a penalty corner gave them a 1-0 lead after six minutes. With just under a minute left in the first quarter, the Minutewomen got on the board again, also coming off a tip from a penalty corner.

The second period was scoreless, but both teams were able to create chances from penalty corners, with UMass getting to shoot off a corner four times, while Ohio got its first penalty corner of the game towards the end of the second period.

The Bobcats came out of the half more aggressive on offense, earning two more penalty corners that ultimately did not result in a goal. UMass was then able to get two more penalty corners, with the second one of the third period resulting in a goal, and a 3-0 lead.

Ohio would again get some opportunities from penalty corners, but the UMass defense stepped up and was able to make the stops.

The UMass offense took off in the fourth period, as they scored three goals, one from open play, one from a penalty stroke, and one from a penalty corner to secure the 6-0 win over the Bobcats.
