Week 1: Bobcats Begin Fall Camp With Plenty to Prove

ATHENS, Ohio– No stranger to fall camp, John Hauser enters the 2026 season in a new seat — at the helm of the Ohio football program.
After serving as Ohio's defensive coordinator, Hauser has spent the spring preparing for his first season as head coach. But preparation can only go so far. Nothing quite compares to stepping onto the field for the first week of fall camp as the leader of the Bobcats.
Now, Hauser has a bigger picture to consider, one that encompasses the entire team. His defensive background gives him a different perspective as he prepares the Bobcats for both sides of the ball and what it takes to attack an opponent's defense.
For Hauser, fall camp is no longer simply about preparing a defense. It's about setting the tone, establishing an identity and leading the Bobcats into a new era.
"I've been pleased with the level of competition and the way our players have competed through the first week of camp. The energy and willingness to challenge each other have created a productive environment," Hauser said. "We have a lot of new faces learning how we do things, so our focus has to remain on the details, eliminating mistakes, and becoming more consistent in our execution. That's how you build a good football team."
The Bobcats enter the season with something to prove. After falling just short of the MAC Championship game a year ago, Ohio was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference in the league's preseason coaches' poll. For Hauser and his team, the preseason ranking is simply another reason to prove the doubters wrong.

Who Takes the First Snap?
The quarterback battle will be one of the biggest storylines throughout fall camp. Ohio has a talented group of quarterbacks, and the competition remains open as the Bobcats work toward identifying their QB1. With multiple players capable of leading the offense, the question is simple: who will take the first snap when Ohio opens the season?
Veterans on OffenseÂ
Experience will be a strength for the Bobcat offense. Running back Duncan Brune recorded 585 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns last season, giving Ohio a proven playmaker in the backfield heading into 2026. Wide receiver Dom Dorwart appeared in all 13 games last season, making seven starts while recording 11 receptions for 119 yards, giving the Bobcats another experienced option in the passing game.
Who Steps Up on Defense?
Ohio returns a strong group on the defensive side of the ball, but the next question is who will emerge as the leaders of the unit. Nathan Hale, Jack Fries, Michael Molnar, Charlie Christopher, DJ Walker and Nehemiah Dukes are among the returners who could play major roles for the Bobcats this season and could find themselves in the conversation for postseason honors. As fall camp continues, all eyes will be on which players take charge and set the tone for the defense.
