Ohio Baseball Falls in Game Two Against NIU

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (3-12, 1-1 MAC) hosted Northern Illinois (8-5, 1-1 MAC) for the second game of its conference opening series Saturday morning. The Bobcats couldn't generate enough offense to overcome the Huskies, falling 13-1.

"We need to turn the page, this game is over," Ohio coach Andrew See said. "We need to learn from it, make sure that we're on time for fastballs tomorrow, and we need to get ahead in the count – that was our achilles heal on the mound today."

The Bobcats scored one run on four hits with one error, while the Huskies had 13 runs on 18 hits and no errors.

Senior third basemen Dyaln Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) led the Ohio offense with two hits and a run scored on the day. Senior outfielder Cam Hill (Chicago, Ill.) recorded the team's lone RBI with a single in the fifth.

Seven different pitchers took the mound for Ohio on Saturday. Senior left-handed pitcher Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) and junior right-hander Ethan Stewart (Langsville, Ohio) each tallied two innings of work out of the bullpen, with Price striking out three.

Northern Illinois struck first, hitting homers in the second and third to take an early 4-0 lead.

Price got Ohio back on track off the mound in the fourth when he struck out the first two batters of the inning and kept the deficit where it was at four. The Northern Illinois offense wasn't silenced for long, however, as it tacked on two more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored their first run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth after an RBI single from Hill to score Shepherd, who singled to start the inning. Going into the sixth, Ohio trailed Northern Illinois 6-1.

The Huskies scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings before adding three more in the ninth to take a 13-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Ohio couldn't put together any kind of rally in the ninth, falling by a final of 13-1.

Up next, Ohio will conclude its series with Northern Illinois tomorrow, March 7, at 1 p.m. That game can be seen on ESPN+.
