MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ohio baseball team (5-21, 3-8 MAC) fell to conference opponent Ball State (14-11, 9-2 MAC) in the second game of the series, 14-7, on Saturday, March 28.
Ohio recorded seven runs on 12 hits with six errors, while Ball State had 14 runs with 17 hits and no errors.
On the mound, sophomore
Hunter Winston (Hinkley, Ohio) got the start, allowing five runs on six hits in three innings pitched, walking three and striking out four. Freshman
Mason Gass (Oakdale, Pa.) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six hits on seven runs, walking one and striking out two.
At the plate, senior
Cam Hill (Chicago, Ill.) went 2-for-5 with a home run, one run scored and two RBIs. Senior
Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) went 3-for-5 with one run scored. Freshman
Sean Fox (Rochester Hills, Mich.) recorded his first hit as a Bobcat while going 2-for-3 at the plate, adding an RBI and scoring a run. Junior
Tyler Stack (Oswego, Ill.) hit his first home run of the season and recorded two RBIs.
In the top of the first, the Bobcats wasted no time getting on the board. After getting a runner on first, Hill hit a double to center field to drive in the run, giving Ohio an early 1-0 lead. Ball State quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.
Stack regained the advantage for the Bobcats in the top of the second, hitting a two-run home run over the right-center fence for the 3-1 lead. The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs for a 3-3 tie entering the third.
Ball State scored five runs on seven hits while holding Ohio scoreless through the fifth inning, pulling ahead to an 8-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, junior
Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Ky.) struck a one-RBI double, then raced home off an RBI from Fox to give Ohio two runs in the sixth. After holding the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Hill opened the seventh with a solo home run. The next pitch,
Dylan Shepherd tripled off the right field wall, eventually scoring on a a sacrifice fly from fifth year
Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.), the Bobcats got another run on the board to cut the Cardinal lead to 8-7.
Ball State went on to score six runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh, ultimately winning the game, 14-7.
