SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Ohio softball team (4-1) wrapped up its opening weekend at the Founders Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. Sunday morning (Feb. 8), with the Bobcats defeating Saint Francis (0-5), 10-2 in six innings. The Bobcats wrapped up the weekend with a 4-1 record.
Overall, Ohio scored 10 runs on 11 hits and no errors, while Saint Francis scored two runs on six hits and committed one error.
Senior
Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) continued her strong weekend, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, while freshman
Allie Cervola (Hunker, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore
Sydney Young (Charleston, W. Va.) added a home run, while freshman
Cora Hall (Newark, Ohio) hit her first career home run, while scoring a run and adding two RBI.
In the circle, junior
Mikie Lieving (West Haven, W.Va.) got the start, tossing one inning and allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout, while senior
Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) entered the game in the second inning, throwing five innings, allowing no runs on two hits, walked one and struck out seven, a new career high.
Saint Francis struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits and one error, taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. The Bobcats looked to get on the board in the bottom of the first, getting two runners on, however, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second still trailing, 2-0.
After a scores second, the Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. After freshman
Sena Smith (East Liverpool, Ohio) singled to lead off the inning, Hummel doubled to left center, putting runners on first and second. After junior
Kylie Gorsuch (North Canton, Ohio) walked, Westler recorded a three-RBI double to right center, clearing the bases and giving Ohio a 3-2 lead. After Westler scored on a ground out, Young would hit her first home run of the season, giving the Bobcats a 5-3 lead going into the fourth inning.
After Saint Francis stranded a runner in the top of the fifth, Ohio added on in the bottom of the frame. After Cervola and junior
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) both reached on back-to-back singles, Hummel hit her second home run of the weekend, a three-run shot to center, giving the Bobcats an 8-2 lead headed into the sixth inning.
After a scoreless top of the sixth, the Bobcats offense continued to add on. After sophomore
Jordyn Wycuff (Pataskala, Ohio) reached on an error, Hall entered the game as a pinch hitter, taking a 3-1 pitch and crushing it over the leftfield wall for her first career hit, RBI and home run, clearing the bases and securing Ohio's 10-2 six innings win.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the 2026 Front Classic hosted by Chattanooga Feb. 13-15. While there, the Bobcats will face off with Canisius, Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee and Bellarmine.
