Ohio Softball Falls to UCF on First Day of Space U Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ohio softball team (7-3) returned to action Thursday night (Feb. 19), falling to Central Florida (10-3), 4-1, on the first day of the 2026 UCF Space U Classic. 

Overall, Ohio scored one run on six hits and did not commit an error, while UCF scored four runs on eight hits and two errors. 

Individually, junior Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) went 2-for-3, while junior Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) recorded a double and drew a walk. Senior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) had one hit, drew a walk and scored a run, while senior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) recorded an RBI. Senior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a hit and drew a walk, while junior Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) also added a base hit. 

In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, allowing four runs, four earned, on eight hits, while walking six and striking out four. 

The Bobcats looked to get on the board in the top of the first inning after Hummel singled to lead off the game. However, the Knights would get out of the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the inning still scoreless. UCF got on the board in the bottom of innings, scoring on a two-out RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. Ohio looked to tie the game in the second inning after Lieving reached on a two-out double, but the UCF defense was able to strand the runner, keeping the 1-0 lead. 

UCF added on in the bottom of the third inning on able RBI double, increasing the lead to 2-0 after three full innings. In the top of the fourth, the Bobcats looked to get a run across after junior Kylie Gorsuch (North Canton, Ohio) and Farmer both reached to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, once again the UCF defense was able to work out of the jam. The Knights would add in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff home run, increasing its lead to 3-0 after four innings. 

The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. After Bare drew a walk to lead off the inning, she would score on a sacrifice fly from Westler to cut the deficit to 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. 

After UCF took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Ohio looked to rally in the top of the seventh. After Hummel and Bare reached to put runners on first and second with two outs, the UCF defense was able to record the final out, securing the 4-1 win. 

Up next, the Bobcats are back in action for day two of the 2026 UCF Space U Classic on Friday, Feb. 20. The Bobcats are set to take on Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. ET and UCF at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
