PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Men's and women's basketball are back in the Convo this week for three games, while the wrestling, track and field and diving teams are back in action on the road! Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio men's basketball team (8-7, 2-1 MAC)is back in Athens for two games this week inside the Convo. The week begins on Tuesday, Jan. 6 when the Bobcats host new MAC member UMass (9-6, 0-3 MAC). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen nationally on CBS Sports Network where Dave Ryan and John Henson will have the call. The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 10 when Ohio hosts Buffalo (13-2, 3-0 MAC). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET anc can be seen on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Jason Toy begins his second season on the mic for the Bobcats and will be joined by veteran and will be joined by veteran college basketball analyst Dave Cecutti. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station net- work's flagship and can be heard on the Varsity Network App. 

Ohio is coming off two-straight road wins to move to 2-1 in MAC play. The Bobcats defeated CMU on Tuesday, 80-64, in Mount Pleasant, before defeating EMU on Saturday in thrilling fashion, with senior guard Jackson Paveletzke hitting a game-winning three at the buzzer to give Ohio the one-point lead. Overall, Paveletzke averaged 18.5 point a game, while going 11-of-22 (.500) from the field, 4-of-10 (.400) from three and 11-of-15 (.733) from the line. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals on the week. Redshirt junior forward Javan Simmons averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a game, with senior forward Aidan Hadaway adding 12 points and 9.5 boards. 

UMass is 9-6 overall and 0-3 in MAC play and are coming off a 101-100 OT to Bowling Green at home on Saturday. Leading UMass is Leonardo Bettiol with 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds a game, while shooting 60.7 percent from the field and 68.4 percent from the line. Marcus Banks, Jr. adds 15.9 points, while shooting 42.0 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the line. 

Buffalo is 13-2 overall and 3-0 in MAC play and are coming off an 85-72 point win against Ball State on Saturday. The Bulls will have Tuesday off before heading to Athens. Daniel Freitag leads UB with 19.7 points and 4.9 rebounds a game, while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 82.6 percent from the line. Ryan Sabol adds 17.1 points a game and is shooting 41.4 percent from three. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team (8-4, 2-0 MAC) is back in action for two more MAC games this week starting on Wednesday, Jan. 7 when Ohio hosts Eastern Michigan (). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is back on the road on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they head to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Buffalo. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET inside Alumni Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 2-0 week that say the Bobcats defeat CMU in overtime, before returning to Athens to defeat Akron. Junior guard Bailey Tabeling helped lead the Ohio women's basketball to a 2-0 week this past week helping the Bobcats open MAC play for the first time since 2015-16. Overall, Tabeling averaged 18/0 points a game, while going 14-of-24 (.583) from the field, 8-of-14 (.571) from three and averaged 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game. Redshirt sophomore Bella Ranallo finished the week averaging 15.0 points a game, while averaging 4.0 steals. 

Eastern Michigan is 7-5 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. The Eagles are coming off a 10-point win against Bowling Green on Dec. 30 in Ypsilanti. Sisi Eleko leads EMU with 17.9 points and 10.2 rebounds a game, while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 78.8 percent from the line. Peyton Hill adds 13.7 points, while shooting 43.6 percent from the line. 

Buffalo is 2-11 overall and 0-2 in MAC play. The Bulls are coming off a loss at WMU on Saturday and will take on NIU at home before heading to Athens. Paula Lopez averages 11.5 points a game and is shooting 34.9 percent from the field, while Meg Lucas averages 8.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game. 

DIVING
Jan. 9-11 / vs UB Diving Invite  / Buffalo, N.Y. / Alumni Arena Natatorium & Dorsi Raynolds Pool / 11 a.m. ET 

The Ohio divers are back in action after the winter break Jan. 9-11 when they head to Buffalo, N.Y. to take part in the UB Diving Invite. All three days begin at 11 a.m. ET inside the Alumni Arena Natatorium & Dorsi Raynolds Pool. 

The Ohio divers last competed at the 2025 TYR' 85 Invite Nov. 20-23 in Lynchburg, Va. Junior Astrid Pichardo earned Diver of the Week honors for her efforts at the TYR '85 Invite this past weekend. Pichardo placed first in both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive with a score of 294.25 in the 1-meter and a score of 301.45 in the 3-meter, which helped the Bobcats secure a first-place finish at the TYR '85 invite. In her 1-meter dive, Pichardo saw an 8.00 score increase from her prelims score to her finals score. In the 3-meter dive, Pichardo saw a 28.50 increase in her score.

At last year's UB Diving Invite, Pichardo placed fifth in the 3-meter dive and sixth in the 1-meter. 

WRESTLING

The Ohio wrestling team (4-1, 1-0 MAC) is back in action Jan. 9-10 when they head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to compete in the 2025 National Wrestling Coaches Assists National Duals. Each day is set to start at 11 a.m. ET inside UNI-Dome and can be seen on FloWrestling.  

The 2026 edition of the National Duals will feature a record 120 teams across seven divisions of collegiate wrestling. New this year is the addition of an NCAA Division III Women's bracket. Programs competing in NCAA Division III will now have the option to participate either in the new DIII women's bracket or the combined NCAA Division I/II women's division.

The Bobcats are coming off a dominate 37-3 win over Bloomsburg on Jan. 2 inside the Convo. Redshirt senior Garrett Thompson was a standout for the Bobcats in his return to the mat. Wrestling at 174 lbs, the 2025 MAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler made quick work of Bloomsburg's Vasilios Dimou, recording an immediate takedown followed by three nearfalls to clinch a 15-0 technical fall victory 1:53 into the match. Redshirt junior Derek Raike scored an 11-2 major decision victory at 157 lbs. over Bloomsburg's William Morrow. Raike recorded a takedown immediately in the first period, an additional takedown in the third period, and earned a bonus point for over four minutes of riding time. While, redshirt Senior Sal Perrine improved to 5-0 in dual meets this season with a dominant 20-4 technical fall victory over Bloomsburg's Connor Hudak. Perrine recorded three takedowns in the first period to jump out to a 15-4 lead in the match, and a third period takedown clinched the match along with a bonus point for 1:34 of riding time.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Ohio indoor track and field team is back in action after the holiday break on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they head to Huntongton, W.Va. to compete in the Marshall Alumni Classic. The field events are set to begin at 10 a.m. ET, with track events scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex. 

Members of the Ohio squad last competed on Dec. 5 at the GVSU Holiday Open. Sophomore Mairin O'Brien kicked off competition for Ohio in the women's 3,000 meters. O'Brien placed seventh in Heat 1 of the event, running a time of 10:01.30. Graduate student Kelsi Harris and sophomore Kaitlyn Stewart competed in the women's 5,000 meters. Harris placed eighth in the Heat 1 of the event, recording a time of 16:45.66. Stewart took home eighth place in Heat 2 with a time of 17:07.16.
