PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – It's the first week of the new semester and women's basketball and wrestling are back in the Convo, while swim and dive returns to the pool for Senior Day! Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio men's basketball team (10-7, 4-1 MAC) is back on the road this week for two more MAC match ups. The week begins on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when Ohio heads to Toledo, Ohio to take on Toledo (9-7, 3-1 MAC). tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats are back on national television this Friday, Jan. 16 when Ohio then heads to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State (4-12, 0-4 MAC). Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on CBS Sports Network. 

The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Jason Toy begins his second season on the mic for the Bobcats and will be joined by veteran and will be joined by veteran college basketball analyst Dave Cecutti. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station net- work's flagship and can be heard on the Varsity Network App. 

Ohio is coming off two more MAC win this past week to move to second in the conference and are now winners of nine of their last 10 games. Senior guard Jackson Paveletzke averaged 16.5 points a game, while recording 5.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists a game. He shot 55.6 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from three and 78.6 percent from the field, while also averaging 1.0 steal a game. Senior forward Aidan Hadaway averaged 17.0 points this past week and is coming off a 27-point and 10-rebound performance against Buffalo on Saturday, while redshirt junior forward Javan Simmons recorded 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last week, while recording his 1,000th career point in Tuesday's win over UMass. Simmons finished that game with 20 points. 

Toledo is 9-7 overall and 3-1 in MAC play and is coming off an 87-73 loss at home to Miami last Friday. The Rockets are led by Sonny Wilson with 17.1 and 4,4 assists per game, while shooting 49.0 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from three. Leroy Blyden, Jr. adds 14.9 points, while Sean Craig adds 13.0 points and 8.1 rebounds a game, while shooting 51.0 percent from the field. 

Ball State is 4-12 overall and 0-4 in MAC play and are coming off a 79-71 loss to UMass on the road on Saturday, The Cardinals will take on Akron on Tuesday before hosting the Bobcats. Davion Hill leads Ball State with 11.6 points a game, while shooting 46.3 percent from the field, while Armoni Zeigler adds 10.7 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. Former Bobcat Elmore James has started in all 16 games for the Cardinals, averaging 8.2 points a game. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team (10-4, 4-0 MAC) is back in action after another 2-0 week this week that say the Bobcats defeat Eastern Michigan and Buffalo, helping them start 4-0 in MAC play for the first time since 2015-16. The week begins on Wednesday, Jan. 14 when Ohio heads to Kent, Ohio to take on Kent State (6-10, 1-4 MAC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the M.A.C. Center and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats then return to Athens on Saturday, Jan. 17 to host Northern Illinois (3-12, 1-3 MAC) for the final time. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. ET inside the Convo and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 2-0 week this week, defeating Eastern Michigan at home, before heading to Buffalo to defeat the Bulls on the road. Junior guard Bailey Tabeling led Ohio this past week with 17.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game, while shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. Monica Williams added 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds, while going 5-for-5 from three. 

Kent State is currently 6-10 overall and 1-4 in MAC play and are coming off a 78-65 win at Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The Flashes are led by Mya Babbitt with 15.7 points and 4.4 rebounds a game, while shooting 35.2 percent from the field and 91.5 percent from the line. Janae Tyler adds 10.5 points and 4l7 rebounds and is shooting 46.0 percent from the field. 

Northern Illinois is currently 3-12 overall and 1-3 in MAC play and are coming off a 65-48 loss at home to Bowling Green on Saturday and will take on Toledo on Wednesday before coming to Athens. 

SWIM AND DIVE

Ohio swim and dive are back in action for the first time in 2026 and in Athens for the final time this season on Friday, Jan. 16 when Ohio hosts Bowling Green. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m ET inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Friday will also be Senior Night for the Bobcats, with a pre-meet ceremony honoring seniors Stephanie Balthazar, Peyton Binns, Morgan Brown, Casadie DiBetta, Emily Ellsworth, Anna McGrath, Allison Schrank and Alexandra Wayner

Ohio last competed as a full team Nov. 20-23 at the 2025 TYR '85 Invite in Lynchburg, Va. where the Bobcats won the invitational with a total of 2,768 points. Juniors Zita Szoke and Astrid Pichardo both earned MAC Weekly honors for their performance, where Szoke placed first in all of her individual events over the weekend, including breaking a school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.48 in the preliminary round.
Overall, Szoke claimed five first-place finishes over the weekend with two second-place finishes, helping the Bobcats to a first-place victory at the TYR 85' Invite. Szoke placed first in the 4x50-yard free relay with a time of 1:30.85, the 50-yard free with a time of 22.34, the 200-yard free with a time of 1:45.83, the 100-yard free with a time of 47.65, and the 4x100-yard free with a time of 3:18.38. Meanwhile, Pichardo placed first in both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive with a score of 294.25 in the 1-meter and a score of 301.45 in the 3-meter, which helped the Bobcats secure a first-place finish at the TYR '85 invite.

Four Bobcats competed at the Toyota US Open Dec. 5-6, with DiBetta competing in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke during the event. She placed 10th in both events, posting impressive times of 1:09.93 in the 100m and 2:32.37 in the 200m. DiBetta also saw time drops in both events, cutting 1.39 seconds from her entry time to her finals swim in the 100m  and dropping more than a second from prelims to finals in the 200-meter breaststroke. She was named the MAC Swimmer of the Week for her efforts. 

WRESTLING

The Ohio wrestling team (4-1, 1-0 MAC) is back in Athens on Friday, Jan. 16 when the Bobcats host SIUE (7-1, 1-0 MAC). The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m ET inside the Convocation Center and will be streamed live on YouTube. 

The Bobcats are coming off a weekend at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. THe Bobcats went 2-3 in their duals over the weekend, defeating CSU Bakersfield and Bloomsburg for the second-straight week, and falling to Central Michigan, Drexal and #17 Northern Iowa. On Saturday, Redshirt Junior Jack Lledo  won both of his matches at 165 lbs, defeating Bloomsburg's Vasilious Dimou by technical fall and Central Michigan's Chandler Amaker by 7-2 decision. At 184 lbs, redshirt Senior Sal Perrine won both of his matches, defeating Bloomsburg's Connor Hudak by technical fall and Central Michigan's Adrien Cramer by sudden victory. Redshirt senior Zayne Lehman  went 2-0 on Saturday at 197 lbs, defeating Bloomsburg's Chris Neal by technical fall and Central Michigan's Luke Cochran by major decision. Lehman finished the weekend with a 4-0 record at the duals.

SIUE is 7-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC duals and are coming off wins over Edinboro and Little Rock Saturday at home. 

TRACK AND FIELD

The Ohio outdoor track and field team is back in action this weekend when they head to Bloomington, Ind. Jan. 16-17 for the 2026 Indiana Invitational. The two-day event will take place at the Gladstein Fieldhouse, with Friday's event set to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET and Saturday's event set to start at 9:45 a.m. ET. 

Ohio is coming off a solid performance at the 2026 Marshall Alumni Classic on Saturday in Huntington, W.Va. Junior Ellie Greenwell was Ohio's top track performer at the Marshall Alumni Classic this past weekend. Greenwell kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the women's mile. She recorded a PR of 4:51.20 that ranks first in the MAC and 31st in the NCAA. Greenwell also raced in the women's 1000m. In her first time competing in the event, she won with a time of 2:49.92. Greenwell's time in the women's 1000m is a new Ohio school record.
