Fakinou’s Late Penalty Kick Propels Ohio Soccer to a Draw Against EMU

Ypistilanti, Mich. – The Ohio Bobcats (3-5-4, 1-1-3 MAC) traveled to Ypsilanti, Michigan, to face off against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (4-5-1, 2-1-1 MAC). The Bobcats scored in the 86th minute off a penalty kick taken by Sophomore Iro Fakinou (Athens, Greece). After regulation, the score remained 1-1, ending the match in a draw.
 
Overall, Ohio outshot Eastern Michigan 17-10, with five shots on goal compared to the Eagles' six. The Bobcats had five corner opportunities to Eastern Michigan's two.
 
Individually, Fakinou (Athens, Greece) scored the Bobcats' first and only goal of the match with four minutes to spare. Fakinou finished with two total shots, and one on goal. Junior Jaimeson Brooker (Powell, Ohio) led the Bobcats in shot attempts with four, with one of her shots being on goal. Senior Ella Deevers (Streetsboro, Ohio) registered three shots with two shots on goal. Senior Hailey Jeng (Centerville, Ohio) also had one shot with one shot on goal. Senior Maia Kaufman (Westerville, Ohio), junior Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich.), graduate student Quintin Tostevin (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), and sophomore Sania Dearing (Pickerington, Ohio) all attempted shots, with no attempt being on goal.
 
Senior Celeste Solma (Columbus, Ohio) started in goal for the Bobcats and played all 90 minutes. Facing 10 Eastern Michigan shots, six of which were on goal, Sloma was able to make five saves, holding the Eagles to one goal.
 
Ohio had the first opportunity in the sixth minute, but Tostevin's shot was off target, keeping the Bobcats off the board.
 
The Bobcats kept offensive pressure on the Eagles with Deevers forcing the Eastern Michigan keeper to make a save in the 14th minute. Brooker also forced the keeper to make a save in the 16th minute of play. Both attempts were unsuccessful, keeping the score tied at 0-0.
 
Ohio's last opportunity of the half came from the foot of Jeng in the 31st minute, but the shot was saved by the Eagle's keeper.  
At halftime, the score remained tied 0-0, with the Bobcats having eight shots on goal compared to the Eagles' five, with Ohio having three shots on goal to Eastern Michigan's four. Each team had two corner opportunities apiece.
 
The Bobcats opened up the second half with energy, looking to get on the board first. The first opportunity of the half came from Robinson in the 47th minute, but the shot was off target.
 
In the 68th minute, Deevers again forced the Eastern Michigan keeper to make save, keeping the score still tied at 0-0.
 
In the 74th minute, Eastern Michigan was able to strike first, off a shot right inside the penalty box, barely beating Sloma. The Eagles were able to take the 1-0 lead.
 
The Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick opportunity in the 86th minute off an Eastern Michigan handball. Fakinou was able to bury the shot in the bottom corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
 
After 90 minutes of play, neither team was able to strike again, keeping the score notched at 1-1. The Bobcats return to Athens on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Chessa Field to take on Ball State at 4 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+.
