Ohio Soccer Drops Physical Battle to Clemson Sunday Afternoon

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio soccer team (1-1-0) returned to action on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 17), falling to Clemson (1-0-1), 1-0, at Chessa Field. 

Overall, Ohio recorded eight shots with four on goal, while Clemson added nine shots with four on goal. The Bobcats added six corner kicks, while the Tigers had three.
 
Individually, senior Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) recorded two shots with one on goal, while junior Jaimason Brooker (Powell, Ohio) added one shot with one on goal. Junior Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) also added one shot on goal, as did sophomore Sania Dearing (Pickerington, Ohio). 

In net, senior Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal while making three saves on nine shots against. 

The Bobcats opened the game with pressure on the Clemson defense, forcing the first corner of the game. However, the Tigers got on the board in the fifth minute with a goal just out of reach of Sloma, putting Clemson up 1-0. Ohio kept battling, drawing two more corners, while junior Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich.) recorded the Bobcats first attempt of the match in the eighth minute. However, it went just ride of the net, keeping the game at 1-0.  

Clemson continued to put pressure on the Bobcats over the remainder of the half, not allowing the Bobcats to get another attempt off the rest of the way, sending the game to halftime with Clemson still leading, 1-0. 

At the half, Clemson recorded seven shots with three on goal, while the Bobcats has one attempt with none on goal. Both teams recorded three corners, while the Bobcats added two saves. 

Clemson opened the second half with the first attempt that was saved by Sloma in the 50th minute. However, the Ohio offense picked up the pressure, with Burchette recording Ohio's first shot on goal of the game, which was saved by the Clemson keeper. Moments later, Murray recorded back-to-back attempts followed by a shot on goal from Brooker, once again forcing the Tigers' keeper to make a save to keep the deficit at 1-0 with under 30 minutes to go in the game. 

The Bobcats continued to battle, keeping the Tigers in the offensive end through most of the second half. The Bobcats recorded another solid attempt in the 79th minute with a shot on goal by Dearing, that force the Clemson keeper to just tip the ball out of the top left corner, keeping the Bobcats off the board. 

Both teams continued the physical play over the remaining 10 minutes of play, but the Bobcats were unable to get the equalizer, falling 1-0.
