Ohio Softball Falls to WMU in Regular Season Finale

KALAMAZOO,  Mich. – The Ohio softball team (35-17, 18-8 MAC) wrapped up the 2025 regular season this afternoon, falling to Western Michigan (16-36, 10-17 MAC), 2-1. With the outcome of today's game, the Bobcats will be the second seed in this year's tournament. 

Overall, Ohio scored one run one seven hits and did not commit an error, while WMU scored two runs on five hits and committed one error. 

At the plate, freshman Abby Kennelly (Waterville, Ohio) went 3-for-3, while sophomore Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) had one double and drew two walks. Senior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) added a hit, and a run scored, while juniors Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) and Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) both had hits for the Bobcats. 

In the circle, redshirt junior Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out three. 

The Bobcats took the early lead int eh top of the first inning, scoring on an RBI double from Farmer, giving Ohio the 1-0 lead headed into the bottom of the first. The Bobcats looked to add on in the top of the third inning, with Farmer drawing a walk and senior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) reaching on an error, but WMU was able to get out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the 1-0 lead. 

After little action on the bases over the next three innings, Ohio tried to add on in the top of the sixth, when with two outs, Kennelly and Westler reached on back-to-back singles. Hummel then singled on her own, however, Kennelly was thrown out at the plate trying to score, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio leading, 1-0. 

WMU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on four hits to take a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh. 

Ohio looked to rally in the top of the inning, with senior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin. Pa.) drawing a walk and Farmer being intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out. However, WMU was able to get the final two outs to pick up the 2-1 win. 

Up next, the Bobcats head to Akron, Ohio for the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament, May 7-10. Ohio earned a first-round bye in the tournament and will begin action on Thursday, May 8 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The full bracket will be released following the conclusion of today's contests.
