Ohio Softball Sweeps Bowling Green in Midweek Doubleheader

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (28-12, 11-4 MAC) returned to action on Tuesday (April 14) for a midweek conference doubleheader with Bowling Green (16-27, 7-11 MAC). Ohio took game one, 10-1, before rallying in the seventh inning to take game two, 5-4. 

GAME ONE: Ohio 10, Bowling Green 1
Overall, Ohio scored 10 runs on 15 hits and committed two errors, while Bowling Green scored one run on six and committed six errors. 

Individually, senior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa) went 3-for-4 with a walk, double and three runs scored. Senior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, while senior Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and one run scored. Freshman Abby Kennelly (Waterville, Ohio) recorded three hits and an RBI, while sophomore Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) had one hit and two RBI. Sophomore Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) added a double and RBI, while junior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) recorded one hit, and one run scored. 

In the circle, redshirt junior Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run, none earned on six hits, while walking two and striking out seven. 

The Bobcats truck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI from senior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) scored Youhas, sending the Bobcats to the bottom of the frame with the lead. However, the Falcons would take advantage of an Ohio error in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 1-1- heading into the second. However, Ohio retook the lead in the top of the second. After Westler led off the inning with a single, she would score on an error after Yuhas reached base for the second-straight inning. Moments later, junior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored on a sacrifice fly, giving Ohio a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the second. 

The Bobcats added on in the top of the fourth inning. After Yuhas reached base for the third-straight time on an infield bunt single. After stealing second, she would later score on a sacrifice fly from Farmer. Ohio added on against in the inning after Hoffner scored on an RBI single from Wilcox, giving the Bobcats a 5-1 lead headed into the bottom of the fourth inning. 

Ohio added on in the top of the sixth inning. After Hoffner reached on an error, she scored moments later an RBI double from Wilcox. The Bobcats were not finished in the inning, when two batters later, Kennelly singled to left, scoring Wilcox and putting the Bobcats up 7-1 headed into the bottom of the frame. 

After Bowling Green stranded a runner in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats looked to add on in the top of the seventh. After Yuhas doubled and Keidel drew a walk, Hoffner and Wilcox reached on back-to-back RBI singles, putting Ohio up 9-1. The Bobcats would add one more run before the end of the inning with Hoffner scoring on a sacrifice fly from Wilson, giving the Bobcats a 10-1 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh.
 
Bowling Green looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, however, Miller would strikeout the side, securing the 10-1 victory for the Bobcats. 

GAME TWO: Ohio 5, Bowling Green 4
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on eight hits and did not commit an error, while Bowling Green scored four runs on seven hits and committed one error. 

At the play, Yuhas went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Wilson went 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and two RBI. Farmer added a double and an RBI, while Keidel recorded a hit, while freshman Anna Wise (Broadview Heights, Ohio) picked up her first career hit. 

In the circle, sophomore Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two. Wise pitched 3.2 innings and did not allow a run on three hits, while walking four and striking out two, while Miller closed out the seventh inning with a strikeout and earning the save. 

Bowling Green struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs on three hits to take an early 4-0 lead. 

Ohio cut the Falcons' lead in half in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a run on an RBI single from Yuhas and a sacrifice fly from Farmer, cutter the deficit to 4-2 headed into the bottom of the fifth. 

The Bobcats looked to cut more into the lead in the top of the sixth inning, getting runners on first and second. However, the BGSU defense was able to record the final out, sending the game to the bottom of the sixth with the Falcons still leading, 4-2. 

Ohio rallied in the top of the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game. After Farmer doubled to lead off the inning, the Bobcats would produce a run on an error from the Falcons. Then with runners on first and third and the Bobcats down to their final out, Wilson roped a two-RBI single down the leftfield line, giving Ohio a 5-4 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh inning. 

Bowling Green looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bobcats were able to send the Falcons down in order, securing the 5-4 win. 

UP NEXT
Ohio returns to Athens for the final weekend series of the season April 18-19 when the Bobcats host MAC foe Miami for a three-game series. The Weekend begins on Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at the Ohio Softball Field, before concluding on Saturday at Noon. Saturday will serve as Ohio's Senior Day with a pregame ceremony. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
