DeKalb, Ill. – The Ohio softball team (22-9, 5-1 MAC) fell to Northern Illinois (8-20, 3-6 MAC), 9-1, in five innings on Saturday afternoon (March 29) in the series finale.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on two hits and committed two errors, while NIU scored nine runs on 10 hits and committed two errors.
Individually, sophomore Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 1-for-2 at the plate with one RBI. Junior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) had one hit, while senior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) scored Ohio's lone run.
In the circle, Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, allowing five runs on two hits. Freshman Anna Wise (Broadview Heights, Ohio) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Redshirt junior Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Yuhas reached base to lead off the game, before stealing second to get within scoring position. Farmer's single brought Yuhas home to give Ohio a 1-0 in the top of the first.
Northern Illinois struck in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs on six hits and an error to take a 7-1 lead heading into the third inning. The Huskies added to their total in the bottom of the third, scoring on a single to center field to push the score 8-1.
After a scoreless fourth, Northern Illinois scored another run in the fifth, picking up the 9-1 victory.
