ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (17-7) returned to Athens for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Stonehill College (6-8) at the Ohio Softball Field. Ohio took game one, 9-1 in five innings, before falling, 4-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: Ohio 9, Stonehill 1 (5 Innings)
Overall, Ohio scored nine runs on seven hits and committed one error, while Stonehill scored one run on two hits and committed four errors.
Individually, senior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) had two hits, one double and two RBI, while sophomore
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) added one hit and scored two runs. Sophomore
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) also scored two runs and had one RBI. Senior
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) had one hit, and a run scored, while senior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) had a double and a run scored. Senior
Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) also recorded a double, scored one run and had two RBI, while junior
Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) also added a hit for the Bobcats.
In the circle, sophomore
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching five innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out two for her sixth win of the season.
Ohio struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on back-to-back doubles from Hoffner and Wilcox to give the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead. The Bobcats added on in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of two Stonehill miscues. Overall, the Bobcats scored six runs on four hits and two errors, with the inning highlighted by a two-RBI double from Yuhas to give the Bobcats an 8-0 lead headed into the fourth inning.
Stonehill got a run on the board in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single, cutting the Ohio lead to 8-1 headed into the bottom of the fourth.
After a scoreless top of the fifth, Ohio scored a run in the bottom of the frame, when Wilson scored after Yuhas reached on an error, securing Ohio's 9-1 five inning win.
GAME TWO: Stonehill 4, Ohio 3
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on 10 hits and did not commit an error, while Stonehill scored four runs on five hits and committed one error.
For Ohio, junior
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) had three hits and one RBI, while Yuhas added two hits, one triple, one run scored and one RBI. Hummel recorded two hits and had a triple with a run scored. Wilcox registered a double and a run scored, while Farmer added one more hit and an RBI.
In the circle, redshirt junior
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three, while freshman
Anna Wise (Broadview Heights, Ohio) pitched 2.2 innings and did not allow a run on one hit, while striking out one.
Stonehill got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring on a one-out ground out. Ohio responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from Farmer.
After a scoreless second inning, Stonehill retook the lead on a two-RBI double, putting the Skyhawks up 3-1 after three full innings. The Bobcats were able to get a run back in the bottom of the fourth. After Wilcox reached on a one-out double, she would later score on an RBI single from Westler, cutting the deficit to 3-2 headed into the fifth.
After Stonehill added on in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double to go up 4-2, Ohio looked to get the runs back in the bottom of the sixth. After Hoffner singled and then moved to second on a two-out single from Wrestler, the Stonehill defense was able to get the final out of the inning, ending the threat.
After the Ohio defense was able to keep the Stonehill offense off the board in the top of the seventh, Ohio looked to rally in the bottom of the frame. After Hummel led the inning off with a triple, she later scored on a sacrifice from Yuhas, cutting the deficit to one. However, Ohio was unable to generate enough offense to take the game, ultimately falling by the final of 4-3.
