Ohio Softball Concludes Low Country Classic with Two Wins

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Ohio softball team (9-4) wrapped up the 2025 Low country Classic hosted by the College of Charleston on Saturday (Feb. 22). The Bobcats swept the day's games, defeating Dartmouth (2-7), 5-0, in game one, before taking down host Charleston (3-10), 15-2 in six innings in the final game of the week. 

GAME ONE: Ohio 5, Dartmouth 0
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, while Dartmouth did not score a run on one hit and committed one error. 

Individually, senior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with one run scored, while sophomore Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a double. Senior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) went 2-for-4, while sophomore Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. 

In the circle, sophomore Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) pitched all seven innings and did not allow a run on one hit, while walking one and striking out five for the complete game shutout. 

Ohio struck first in the bottom of the first inning. After Yuhas scored on an RBI single from Hoffner, Farmer and junior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) both reached, putting runners on second and third, setting up a two-RBI single from Wilson to put the Bobcats up 3-0 headed into the second inning. Ohio looked to add on in the bottom of the third, with Yuhas and Hoffner reaching on back-to-back singles, however, the Dartmouth defense was able to get out of the jam, sending the game to the fourth with Ohio leading, 3-0.

After the Bobcats stranded two in the bottom of the fourth, Dartmouth looked to get on the board in the top of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. However, Hoffner was able to pick off the runner at third attempting to steal, getting Dartmouth off the board and Ohio ahead, 3-0. 

The Bobcats added on in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Farmer reached on a one-out double to center, Wilson was able to drive in the run with an RBI double, putting Ohio up 4-0 headed into the sixth inning. 

The Bobcats added another run on in the bottom of the sixth inning, with junior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) scoring on a Dartmouth error, increasing the Ohio lead to 6-0 headed into the seventh inning. 

Dartmouth looked to rally in the top of the seventh inning, however two ground outs and a strikeout from Lieving to end the game, secured the 5-0 win for the Bobcats. 

GAME TWO: Ohio 15, College of Charleston 2 (6 Innings)
Overall, Ohio scored 15 runs on 12 hits and committed one error, while Charleston scored two runs on two hits and committed four errors. 

Individually, senior Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) went 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI and one run scored, while junior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Hoffner added two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI, while Yuhas added one hit, one run, one RBI and two stolen bases. Westler scored three runs and drove in one, while freshman Jordyn Wycuff (Pataskala, Ohio) added one hit, two RBI and a run scored. 

In the circle, freshman Anna Wise (Broadview Heights, Ohio) got the start and her second win of the weekend, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on one hit, while walking one and striking out two. Redshirt junior Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched two innings and did not allow a run on one hit. 

Charleston struck in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead headed into the third inning.  The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. After Farmer reached on a single and Westler reached on a fielding error, an RBI single from Wilcox scored Westler, cutting the Charleston lead in half headed into the bottom of the fourth. 

After a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning, Ohio took the lead in the top if the fifth. After Hummel led off with a single, Hoffner would crush a double to left center, trying the game at 2-2. Moments later, after Farmer drew a walk, an RBI single from Westler scored Hoffner, giving Ohio its first lead of the night. Then with two outs, Wilcox recorded her own two-RBI double, putting the Bobcats up 5-2 headed into the bottom of the fifth. 

Charleston looked to get a run back in the bottom of the frame, with a double and a hit by a pitch putting runners on first and third with two outs. However, the Ohio defense forced a ground out to end the inning.

The Ohio defense came alive in the top of the sixth inning. Overall, Ohio would go on to score 10 runs on six hits and capitalize on three Charleston errors. The inning was capped by a two-RBI double from Hoffner, putting the Bobcats ahead 15-2 headed into the bottom of the sixth. 

Charleston looked to extend the game in the bottom of the inning, drawing a two-out walk. However, Miller was able to force the lineout to end the inning and secure the 15-2 win. 

UP NEXT
Ohio heads to Nashville, Tenn. Feb. 28-March 2 to compete in the 2025 Purple/Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb. While there, the Bobcats will face off with Lipscomb, Northern Iowa and Illinois State.
