DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Ohio men's basketball team (1-5) opened play at the 2025 Geico Sunshine Slam on Monday (Nov. 24), falling to George Mason (6-0), 92-69, inside the Ocean Center.
Overall, Ohio shot 41 percent from the field, 31 percent from three and 65 percent from the line, while George Mason shot 46 percent from the field, went 14-of-31 from three and shot 70 percent from the line. George Mason outrebounded the Bobcats 39-36, while Ohio turned the ball over 12 times and forced six turnovers. George Mason also registered 19 assists compared to Ohio's 12.
Individually, senior forward
Aidan Hadaway (Lafayette, Ga.) scored 16 points, going 3-of-8 from three and grabbed five rebounds. Redshirt junior forward
Javan Simmons (Columbus, Ohio) added 12 points, while senior guard
Ajay Sheldon (Dublin, Ohio) added eight points. Senior guard
Jackson Paveletzke added seven points and dished out five assists.
George Mason opened the game with the first basket before Simmons tied it up with a layup of his own. However, the Patriots matched it with a three before another Simmons basket cut lead to one. However, George Mason them when on a 7-0 run to take a 12-4 lead into the first media timeout. After George Mason took a 12-point lead, a three from Hadaway and Paveletzke cut the Ohio deficit to 22-14 with 11:59 left in the half. Out of the media timeout, a three from Sheldon helped cut the Ohio deficit to six, however George Mason stopped the run with a jumper and free throws. Dior Conners (Columbus, Ohio) traded baskets with the Patriots taking a 35-24 lead into the under-six media timeout.
After George Mason went up 40-24, a jumper from Conners and a three from sophomore guard
Elijah Elliott (Orlando, Fla.) cut the deficit to 40-29, however George Mason countered with a layup to take a 42-29 lead into the final media timeout of the half. Out of the break, Ohio was unable to chip away, with George Mason taking a 52-33 lead into the half.
At the break, Ohio shot 40 percent from the field, 31 percent from three and were 5-of-7 from the line, while George Mason shot 53 percent from the field, were 8-of-15 from three and 8-of-9 from the line. Ohio was outrebounded 21-14, while George Mason dished out 10 assists to Ohio's five.
At the half, Hadaway led Ohio with nine points and three rebounds, while Simmons added seven points.
George Mason opened the second half on an 18-2 run, and the Bobcats were unable to recover, despite going on an 11-0 run to close out the game, falling 92-69.
