AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (5-8, 1-1 MAC) concluded the weekend with a 3-2 victory (25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 15-6) at Akron (5-9, 1-1 MAC), picking up its first conference win of the season on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Junior Anna Kharchysnka (Kyiv, Ukraine) was a dominating offense force for Ohio, tallying a career-high 26 kills and team-high 29.5 points. Kharchynska also recorded seven block assists and seven digs. Sophomore
Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) was also a main contributor to the Bobcats' offense, tallying 19 kills and 21.0 points.
Two setters served a role on the floor for the Bobcats. Freshman
Bryn Janke (Westfield, Wis.) distributed a team-high 29 assists and junior
Chariti McKeller (Toledo, Ohio) finished with 23 assists.
Sophomore
Kendall Hickey (Fishers, Ind.) and Hunt led the team in digs. Hickey recorded 14 digs and Hunt recorded 10 digs total.
Ohio came out strong, winning back-to-back sets against the Zips. The Bobcats gained an early 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the first set and a 25-18 win in the second set. Akron answered back with its own back-to-back wins in the third and fourth set, forcing a fifth set a competition to be played. Despite Akron starting the fifth set with a 4-0 scoring run, Ohio regained control and went on to score nine unanswered points. The Bobcats went on to the win the fifth set in a 15-6 decision, taking the match over the Zips.
The Bobcats will be back in action when they host Toledo for their Turn It Gold Match on Friday, Oct. 4 in the Convo. The match is set to start at 6 pm ET.
