ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (3-5) faced Ivy League opponent Brown (2-3) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21), falling 4-1 at Pruitt Field.
Brown dominated the match with 24 shots compared to the Bobcats' four, while the Bears recorded 15 penalty corners to Ohio's one.
Ohio's shots came from freshman Sophie Van Der Wal (Naarden, Holland), junior Mary Huffman (Ypsilanti, Mich.), and senior Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium), with the lone goal scored by junior Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany).
Despite Brown's four goals, graduate student Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) had another standout performance, making 14 saves.
The first half of the game saw little action until the closing moments of the second quarter, where Brown scored two goals, taking the lead and momentum into halftime. At the half, Brown led 2-0, having outshot Ohio, 15-2.Â
The game took a turn for the Bobcats moments into the third quarter, as Brown scored two more goals within two minutes of each other to extend their lead to 4-0.Â
Ohio fired back in the 36th with a goal from Plaehn off a penalty comer, assisted by Emily Risser (Palmyra, Pa.), putting the Bobcats on the board and cutting the Brown lead to 4-1.Â
"Anouk was a beast. She can run through a whole team; we just have to figure out how the team can support her better because she's pretty ruthless," head coach Ali Johnstone said.
In the final quarter, Ohio fought hard, with Lotze not allowing any further goals from the Bears, however the Ohio offense was unable to recover, falling 4-1.Â
The Bobcats will travel for their next game on Sunday (Sept. 29) against Longwood. First touch is set for 1 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+.
