East Lansing, Mich. - The Ohio soccer team (1-1-1) returned to action Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25), falling to No. 8 Michigan State (2-0-1), 3-0 in East Lansing, Mich.
Overall, Michigan State outshot Ohio, 12-3, with six shots on goal to the Ohio's two. Ohio keeper recorded two saves, while Michigan State took four corner kicks.
Individually,
Jamison Brooker (Powell, Ohio) led with two shots on goal, followed by
Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) with one shot on goal.
In net, junior
Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) got the start, playing all 90 minutes, while allowing three goals and making three saves.
Michigan State struck first, when in the 10th minute the Spartans' Meg Hughes, with an assist from Emerson Sargeant gave MSU an early 1-0 lead. After MSU continued to press, Hughes scored another goal in the 18th minute with assists from Bella Najera and Sofia Beerworth, giving Michigan State a 2-0 lead.
As the first half continued, Sloma recorded a diving save in the far left corner of the net, keeping Michigan State off the board and keeping the Bobcats at a 2-0 deficit heading into the half.
At the break, Michigan State outshot Ohio, 6-0, with the Bobcats recording one save.
The Bobcats opened the second half with Sloma making a save in the bottom center of the net, keeping Michigan State at bay early in the second half. After the goal kick by Sloma, the Bobcats got its first attempt of the match, with Brooker the ball at the bottom center of the net that was saved by Michigan State. Moments later, Murray registered her own attempt, which was just off target. A few minutes later with a better rhythm displayed by the Bobcats, Brooker took another shot on goal at the top center of the net however the Michigan State once again picked up the save to keep Ohio off the board as the half went on.
In the last ten minutes of the the game Ohio was in constant battle with Michigan State over the ball, with neither team making any leeway of hopes for a goal, until the Spartans, in the 89th minute of the game, scored their third goal of the game by Mackenzie Anthony with an assist from Sargeant, securing the 3-0 victory.
The Bobcats finally return to Athens on Sunday, Sept. 1 to face off against Valparaiso. First touch is at 1 p.m. on Chessa Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
