GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Ohio softball team (6-4) completed an undefeated weekend at the Spiro Classic, taking down the hosts, UNC Greensboro, with a seventh-inning comeback to win 6-4.
Ohio went 5-0 over the three days at the Spiro Classic. The Bobcats recorded two wins over UNCG, two against Sacred Heart, and picked up one win against Drexel.
Today, Ohio was helped at the plate by a four-RBI performance from senior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Logan opened the first inning with a two-run inside-the-park home run. She added a two-run double in the seventh inning to tie the game at four apiece. Senior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) picked up the other two RBI for Ohio. Her two-run home run in the seventh inning provided the Bobcats with a two-run advantage, giving Ohio the win.
In the circle, freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) was the starting pitcher, throwing 1.1 innings while giving up three runs. Redshirt sophomore Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) earned the win in relief for Lieving, pitching five scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Bobcats and Spartans opened the game with three runs in the first inning. Logan's inside-the-park home run provided Ohio with a two-run advantage, but it was cut to one in the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom of the second, UNCG scored three runs and took a 4-2 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) opened the inning with a double into right center. The Spartans recorded two outs before junior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) reached on an error. Logan doubled down the left field line, scoring Hoffner and Yuhas to tie the game. Paoli would prove to be the difference, driving a ball over the left field fence to give Ohio their first lead since the first inning.
The Bobcats took their two-run advantage into the bottom of the seventh, looking to close out the game. After a UNCG one-out double, Skipp Miller was able to close out the game with a strikeout and groundout to first. The three outs gave Ohio their fifth win in three days, finishing the Spiro Classic with a 5-0 record.
With the win, Ohio improved to 6-4 after entering the weekend with a 1-4 record. The Bobcats will return to action with the Frost Classic next weekend (Feb. 23-25) in Chattanooga, Tenn. Ohio will first face off against UT Martin on Friday (Feb. 23) at 10:00 a.m.
