PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –Basketball is in full swing, while cross country heads to the Great Lakes Regional and volleyball wraps up the regular season with their eyes on a MAC Tournament bid. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (6-3, 4-1 MAC) is set to continue midweek MACtion when they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles (5-4, 2-3 MAC) on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN2 with Jay Alter and Rocky Boiman on the call. Ohio is coming off a 41-0 victory over Kent State last Wednesday on the road. The victory made the Bobcats bowl eligible for the third-straight year. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro finished the day 14-of-24 with 142 yards through the air and added 41 yards on eight attempts on the ground. Redshirt junior quarterback Nick Poulos also tossed a touchdown and added 22 yards on the ground late in the game.Special teams was responsible for two touchdowns in the third quarter, marking the first time since 2008 the Bobcats recorded multiple special teams touchdowns in a game. Notably, the feat has only been accomplished five times by a FBS program during the 2024 season. Graduate student wide receiver Eamonn Dennis housed a 96 yard kick off while Owen took a punt back for a touchdown 61 yards.Dennis was named the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance. 
 
The Eagles are currently 5-4 overall and 2-3 against MAC opponents. On Nov. 2, they went toe-to-toe with the Toledo Rockets, maintaining a lead until the fourth quarter. Eastern Michigan squeezed in one final touchdown as the clock ran out, but a failed two-point conversion left them trailing by just one point. As a team, Eastern Michigan averages 29.22 points per game on 146.4 rushing yards and 245.67 passing yards. Their opponents average 26.33 points per game. Senior quarterback Cole Snyder is 191-for-317 on 2,087 yards over nine games, throwing 11 passing touchdowns and three interceptions. Snyder isn't afraid to use his legs, recording 106 carries and four rushing touchdowns so far this season.

The Ohio men's basketball team (1-1) are back on the road this week, starting on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when they head to Normal, Ill. to take on Illinois State (1-1). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET inside CEFCU Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then stays on the road and heads to Memphis, Tenn. on Friday, Nov. 15 to take on Memphis (2-0). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET inside FedExForum and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week that saw the Bobcats defeat UNC Asheville, 82-76 inside the Convocation Center on Saturday night. Overall, Ohio shot 44.6% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and was 24-of-31 from the line, while UNC Asheville shot 42.9% from the field, 44% from beyond the arc and was 11-of-22 from the line. Ohio out-rebounded UNC Asheville, 40 to 50. Individually, senior AJ Clayton led Ohio with 19 points and 3 rebounds, going 8-of-16 from the field and 3-of-9 from behind the arc. Graduate student Shereef Mitchell scored 12 points, going 5-of-7 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line.

Illinois State is currently 1-1 after the first week of play, defeating North Dakota State on Thursday in Fargo after falling to UT Martin by two points in the the season opener on Monday. Illinois State was picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll, while sophomore guard Johnny Kinziger was picked on the preseason First Team, and Malachi Poindexter to the preseason Second Team.

Memphis is currently 2-0 overall with wins over Missouri and UNLV and won't play again until Friday's matchup with the Bobcats. Memphis was picked to finish second in the ACC Coaches Preseason Poll, while four Tigers were also recognized with preseason honors as PJ Haggerty and Tyrese Hunter landed on the first team all-conference, while Colby Rogers earned a spot on the second team. Jared Harris was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team (0-2) is back in the Convo this weekend when the Bobcats host George Washington (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 16. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats look to rebound after an 0-2 week to open the season, falling to Georgia Southern and Bellarmine. The Bobcats are in the middle of a long homestand to open the season, playing at the Convo six times in their first seven games. 

George Washington is currently 1-1 overall and will play Virginia University of Lynchburg Monday night before heading to Athens to take on the Bobcats. George Washington opened the season with a win over Delaware at home, before falling at Howard on Friday. This season GW welcomes nine new players into the fold this season which includes five transfer students and four first-years. The transfers are comprised of three D1 graduates and two juniors who make their way to Foggy Bottom from non-Division I universities. GW's first-year class is headlined by 2023-24 Michigan Miss Basketball Award winner Gabby Reynolds. GW's squad is also comprised of five returning players from last year's team.

CROSS COUNTRY
Nov. 15 / at Great Lakes Regional / Norton, Ohio / Silver Creek Cross Country Course / Women's 6k: 11 a.m./ Men's 10k: 12 p.m. / Meet Information / Live Results 

THe Ohio men's and women's cross country teams head to Norton, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 15 to compete in the 2024 NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by the MAC and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission at the Silver Creek Cross Country Course. The women's 6k race is set to begin at 11 a.m., while the men's 10k race is set to begin at 12 p.m. 

Ohio last competed two weeks ago at the 2024 MAC Championships in Muncie Ind. The women's team earned an impressive second-place finish in the 6k race, while the men's team placed fifth in the 8k. 

On the women's side, junior Leila Boussedra, senior Kelsi Harris  and junior Allie Martin earned All-MAC Second Team honors. Sophomore Andrew Bracken's performance placed him on the All-MAC Second Team and was the only member of the men's team to earn conference honors. This marks the first time that Harris, Martin and Bracken have received All-MAC cross country honors. Boussedra has now earned a spot on the All-MAC Second Team for three-straight seasons.

Boussedra led the Bobcats in the women's 6k race with a team best finish. The junior placed eighth overall with a time of 20:47.4. Harris (20:53.1, PR) and Martin (20:53.4, PR) both ran personal-best times to help them placed 12th and 13th, respectively. Bracken led the Bobcats in the men's 8k race with a top 10 finish. The sophomore placed 10th overall and recorded a team-best time of 24:33.8.

The Ohio volleyball team (14-13, 10-6 MAC) is back in action for the final two matches of the regular season this weekend, as the Bobcats look for the final push to earn a top-six seed and a bid to the MAC Tournament.Ohio heads to Bowling Green, Ohio Nov. 15 and 16 to take on the Falcons (19-8, 14-2 MAC). Friday's match is set to begin at 6 p.m. inside the Stroh Center and can be seen on ESPN+. The regular season finale is set to begin on Saturday at 4 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off an impressive 3-0 week that saw wins over Kent State and a series sweep of Buffalo, downing the Bulls 3-1 on Friday, before sweeping them in the Convo on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. In Saturday's dominating victory, junior Anna Kharchynska led the Bobcats' offense with a team-high 18 kills and 20.5 points. Sophomores Kam Hunt and Olivia Gardner finished with a combined 16 kills and 18.0 points. Schafer also added five kills and six points. Freshman Bryn Janke led the team in assists with 34 total, as well as 12 digs. On defense, Hoerlein recorded a team-high six blocks. Kharchynska added four blocks for the Bobcats.

Bowling Green in 19-8 overall and 14-2 in MAC play and have already clinched a spot to the MAC Tournament. BGSU is currently on a nine-match winning streak and are coming off and four-set win over Toledo and back-to-back sweeps of NIU on the road last week. 

WRESTLING

The Ohio wrestling team (1-0) opens the home portion of the schedule on Sunday, Nov. 17 when the Bobcats host Big Ten opponent, Michigan State. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

After an opening weekend win over Wisconsin, Ohio is coming off an impressive showing at the Michigan State Open on Saturday, with six Bobcats placing, including Peyten Kellar who claimed the title in the 157-pound division.  

The Spartans come to Athens with a 1-0 record after an opening weekend win over American, before hosting their own open last week with three finalists and none total placewinners on the day.
