Ohio Volleyball Earns Four-Set Victory Against High Point

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Ohio volleyball team (2-1) returned to action on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27), defeating High Point (1-2) 3-1, (25-22, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23) in its final game of the 2023 LD&B Insurance Invitational hosted by James Madison. Following the day's matches, Senior Sam Steele (Omaha, Neb.) was named tournament MVP, while graduate student Caitlin O'Farrell (Suwanee, Ga.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Bobcats outhit High Point .306 to .199 with 63 kills over 160 attempts. The Panthers totaled 54 kills over 156 attempts.

The first set started out close, but High Point soon took the lead. After a Panthers' run, Ohio found themselves down 19-12, before the Bobcats strung together a 7-3 run to get within three. Ohio quickly stole the momentum and finished the set, registering six of the last seven points, winning set one in come from behind fashion, 25-22.

After capturing the first set, the second was another battle. The Panthers strung together a 9-3 run to go up 12-8. The Bobcats fought back, however could not overcome the early deficit, dropping the set, 25-22.

Set three was a battle for the lead, with neither team gaining a significant advantage. After 11 ties, the set was knotted up at 17 points each. The Bobcats called a timeout and rallied to go on an 8-2 run to win the third set, 25-19.

In set four, both Ohio and High Point came out hungry. Like the third, both teams were trading points with neither able to extend their advantage. The Bobcats sparked a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead. Alternating three-point runs, the Panthers tied the set at 18, forcing an Ohio timeout. The Bobcats were able to hold off the High Point, capturing the set, 25-23 and the match.

The Bobcats were led  O'Farrell with a team-high 16 kills and five blocks, while recording a .412 hit percentage. Freshman Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) had 13 kills and contributed defensively with nine digs.

Sophomore Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) and graduate student Parker Kwiatkowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) combined for 18 kills and five blocks. Kwiatkowski also tallied a game-high 45 assists. Steele led the game with 22 digs.

Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Dayton, Ohio for the Dayton Flyer Classic Sept. 1-2.
