ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Ohio soccer team (2-0-1) maintained their undefeated start to the 2023 campaign with a 1-1 draw on the road against Navy (1-0-3).
The Bobcats started out hot with a shot from redshirt senior Haley Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) deflecting off the crossbar. Senior Izzi Boyd (Gibsonia, Pa.) provided another chance, firing the ball from the top of the box requiring Navy's goalkeeper to make a save.
In the 11th minute, Boyd played a ball up the right side to sophomore Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.). Murray collected the pass, cut it across the face of a Navy defender, and wrapped a left-footed shot into the side netting to put the Bobcats ahead. The goal was Murray's second of the season, tying Boyd for the team lead.
Following the Bobcats' goal, Navy began to find their footing. The Mids fired multiple shots on goal and whipped in a number of crosses, each of which were dealt with by sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio). Sloma's strong first-half and multiple defensive stops from the Bobcat backline gave Ohio a one-goal lead heading into the half-time break.
The start of the second half did not bounce the Bobcats' way. A defensive clearance ricocheted off the side of a Navy forward and caromed into the net. The goal, which tied the game, was the first goal given up by Ohio this season.
Ohio responded with a threatening long-range shot from Boyd. The knuckle-balling shot was headed into the bottom left corner before it was parried away for a corner kick.
The Bobcats were able to gain more control of the game and created several scoring opportunities. The first coming from freshman Jaimason Brooker's (Powell, Ohio) free kick that needed to be punched away for a corner kick. From the impending corner, senior Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) put another shot on goal but could not get it past the keeper. Minutes later, Brooker picked up a yellow card after slowing Navy's counter-attacking threat.
Ohio continued to throw crosses into the box but could not get on the end of them. After a misplay from Navy's defense, freshman Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) sparked a chance but could not corral the ball in front of the net.
A corner kick in the last minute led to a shot from freshman Ellie Greenwell (Park Hills, Ky.) that rattled around the box and hit off a Navy defender's arm. The referee signaled to the spot for a Bobcat penalty kick. However, Ohio was unable to put the ball in the back of the net and the final whistle was blown just seconds later, ending the match with a 1-1 draw.
It was an exciting back-and-forth match alongside the Severn River. The Bobcats out-shot the Mids 19-10 and 10-4 for shots on goal. Ohio also notched one more corner than Navy, tallying six to the Mids' five.
