AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (18-30, 14-15 MAC) fell to the Akron Zips (21-33, 12-17 MAC) today at Skeeles Field, 7-6.
Individually, fifth year Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the Bobcats in hits, going 3-for-5 at the plate with one run and two RBIs. Redshirt sophomore Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 2-for-4 and recorded two RBIs.
Redshirt junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) got the start on the mound, pitching through six innings, allowing only two runs on three hits while retiring six batters.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard first. A groundout from fifth year Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) drove senior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) home for the early lead. Akron quickly answered with two runs to take the 2-1 lead at the end of the second.
Sturek tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI single to left field. After a scoreless fourth, Ohio regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Sturek doubled down the left field line, scoring Finney.
The Bobcats extended their lead in the seventh, taking advantage of a Zips' fielding error to go up 4-2. The next at-bat, Dolan drove in sixth year Trevor Lukkes (Tustin, Calif.) and junior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.), giving Ohio a four-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh. Akron tallied five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead, 7-6.
Unable to score again, the Bobcats fell, 7-6.
Up next, the Bobcats return to action tomorrow (May 20) for the third game of the series against Akron and their final game of the 2023 season. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
