ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (4-10) won both games against the Bowling Green Falcons (3-10) today (March 11) at Bob Wren Stadium. After scoring eight runs in the second inning, the Bobcats won game one, 11-3. They came back from behind in game two, winning 6-4.
Individually, freshman Billy Adams (Medina, Ohio) finished the weekend with a .750 batting average, going 6-for-8 with one double, four RBIs and one run scored. Junior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) went 5-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs scored while fifth years Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) went 4-for-7.
On the mound, sophomore Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) secured the victory in the first game, pitching three scoreless innings while allowing only two hits. In the second game, sophomore Zach Weber (Lebanon, Ohio) was credited with the win while sophomore Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.) closed the game, earning his first save of the season.
"The coaching staff challenged the team last night. I said 'we are going to win two games tomorrow to win the series,'" said head coach Craig Moore."Those guys stepped up to the challenge and accepted it."
GAME ONE
After Bowling Green stranded two runners, junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) doubled down the right field line, driving in fifth year Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) for the first run of the game. Sturek followed with an RBI single, giving Ohio a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Falcons struck in the top of the second, tying the game off a wild pitch and an RBI single. A sacrifice fly to center field left the Bobcats trailing by one run. Ohio's bats lit up in the bottom of the frame, driving in eight runs. The Bobcats took a 4-3 lead with a fielder's choice followed by a bases-loaded walk. Patino followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Rausch before an Antle single drove in two more runs. Senior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) tacked on two more runs with a double and Adams rounded out the inning with an RBI single, putting the Bobcats up 10-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ohio extended their lead by one with another RBI double from Adams. Neither team scored the rest of the game and the Bobcats won, 11-3.
GAME TWO
Bowling Green stuck quickly, scoring once in the top of the first. After two scoreless innings, a bases-loaded groundout for the Bobcats tied the game. Adams followed with an RBI single up the middle, giving Ohio a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth. The Falcons answered with a two-run homer the next inning, reclaiming the lead. After a Falcons groundout drove in a run, the Bobcats trailed by two.
Ohio went to work in the bottom of the sixth. First, back-to-back RBI singles from Adams and redshirt sophomore Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) evened the score. Next, Finney took advantage of a wild pitch and Dolan scored on a fielder's choice, putting the score at 6-4.
Redshirt junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) and Boncal pitched a combined three scoreless innings, solidifying Ohio's 6-4 victory over the Falcons.
Up next, the Bobcats return to Bob Wren Stadium March 17-19 when they host the Central Michigan Chippewas. Friday's first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
