WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Ohio baseball team (0-2) fell to No. 19 Virginia (2-0) Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) at Brooks Field, 8-4.
The Bobcats were led offensively by redshirt sophomore AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio), who drove three RBIs off a double and a home run, scoring twice himself. Fifth years Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) and Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) each tallied two hits, with Minzey also recording an RBI. Seniors Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) and Trenton Neuer (Nicholasville, Ky.) each scored a run for Ohio.
Sophomore Zach Weber (Lebanon, Ohio) got the start on the mound today. Weber pitched four innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs while striking out two batters and walking none. Redshirt Junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs and two hits, while striking out two batters. Junior Carter Sabol (Nokomis, Ill.) entered the game in the sixth for Ohio and gave up a single run on four hits. Fifth year Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) finished the game only allowing one hit and walking one runner.
The Virginia Cavaliers started the game off with three runs in the top of the first inning. Rausch put Ohio on the board in the bottom of the inning, running home off a single from Minzey, making the score 3-1. After a scoreless second, Rausch hammered a ball into left field for a two-run home run, tying the game, 3-3.
Virginia answered in the fourth with a two-run home run, taking a 5-3 lead. The Bobcats' two-run deficit remained for the next two innings, with neither team crossing the plate. A single and a double from the Cavaliers in the seventh inning drove in their last three runs of the game.
After neither team scored in the eighth, the Bobcats looked for a spark on offense. Rausch continued to lead the Bobcats and recorded his third RBI of the day with a double to right center driving in Neuer. Unable to score again, Ohio fell to Virginia, 8-4.
Up next, the Bobcats return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 when they face Navy to close out the weekend in Wilmington. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed on FloBaseball.
