KALAMAZOO, Michigan – The Ohio soccer team (4-6-3) tied with Western Michigan (7-3-3) today (Oct. 8) with a final score of 1-1.
Ohio created their first chance of the game after senior Carsyn Prigge (Lexington, Ky.) found sophomore Rayann Pruss (Perrysburg, Ohio) down the left wing. Pruss' left-footed cross connected with senior Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) at the top of the box but her shot missed just wide.
On the other end of the field, the Broncos pushed forward creating a few opportunities for themselves. Sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) did her part to deny Western Michigan of any advantage. Her three first half saves helped the game go into the half scoreless.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 55th minute after Robertson pressed the back line, causing a mistake between the Bronco defender and goalkeeper. She flicked the ball through on goal, sliding it into the empty net to put Ohio up 1-0. The goal was Robertson's fifth of the season, tying a career-high set in 2021.
Freshman Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) was inches from giving the Bobcats their second goal of the game. Her shot from just outside the box fired off the crossbar after the Western Michigan keeper got a touch on it.
The Broncos finally broke through with five minutes to go. A shot of the post ricocheted to the feet of a Western Michigan forward who found the back of the net, tying the game.
Ohio looked for the game-winning goal in the final minutes, but were unable to spark any clear chances. The final whistle blew with the final score of 1-1.
Western Michigan outshot Ohio 25-10 and nine to four for shots on goal. The Broncos also held a strong advantage in the corner kick count with nine. The Bobcats did not have a corner kick
Although the Bobcats were unable to preserve the clean sheet, Sloma did set a career-high with eight saves.
