Bobcats Can't Stop Toledo's Hot Hand, Fall to the Rockets on the Road

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio men's basketball team (9-9, 1-4 MAC) returned to action on Tuesday night (Jan. 17), falling to Toledo (12-6, 3-2 MAC), 90-75, inside Savage Arena. 
 
Overall, Ohio shot 43.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from three and were 11-of-13 from the line, while Toledo shot 55.6 percent from the field, 52.2 percent from three and were 18-of-26 from the line. Toledo out-rebounded Ohio, 35-34, and dished out 17 assists to the Bobcats' 13. The Bobcats forced 15 turnovers and recorded 10 steals. 
 
Individually, the Bobcats were led by a career-high 21 points from freshman guard Elmore James (Cleveland, Ohio). James went 8-of-10 from the field, 2-of-3 from three and 3-of-4 from the line. Graduate student forward Dwight Wilson III (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 17 points and 11 rebounds, while junior guard Jaylin Hunter (Manchester, Conn.) scored 10 points and dished out four assists. Senior forward Ben Roderick (Powell, Ohio) also scored 10 points and five rebounds. 
 
Toledo won the tip and got on the board first, with three-straight threes and two free throws to take an early 11-0 lead, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout with 18:07 left in the first half. Out of the timeout, Toledo took a 13-0 lead, before a three and a jumper from Hunter cut the Ohio deficit to 13-5 going into the first full media timeout. Out of the timeout, Toledo went on to take a 26-7 lead before a jumper from senior guard DeVon Baker (Dayton, Ohio) stopped the Rockets run with 11:42 left in the half. 
 
After Toledo took a 29-9 lead, a steal and a layup from James and a layup from Wilson III cut the Ohio deficit to 29-14 with 9:40 left in the half. After another Toledo three, a free throw from Wilson III and a three from James cut the Bobcats' deficit to 32-18 going into the under-eight media timeout. After the Rockets went up 36-18, a layup from Wilson III stopped the run. However, Toledo went on to take a 44-22 lead going into the final media timeout. Over the final two minutes of the half, free throws and a three from Roderick and free throws from Baker increased Bobcats' points, however, the Ohio defense was unable to stop Toledo, sending the game to the locker room with Ohio trailing 52-31. 
 
At the half, Ohio shot 37.9 percent from the field, 25 percent from three and were 6-of-7 from the line, while Toledo shot 67.9 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from three and were 6-of-10 from the line. Toledo out-rebounded Ohio, 17-14 and 16 fastbreak points compared to Ohio's five. 
 
Individually, Wilson III led with seven points and five rebounds, while Hunter scored seven points. James added six points, as did Baker 
 
Toledo got the first points of the second half with two free throws. Layups from James and Roderick helped cut the Bobcats deficit, however another three from Toledo increased their lead to 61-37 going into the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, a jumper from James and a three from Roderick once again cut into the Bobcats' deficit to 63-44. However, Toledo responded with an 8-4 run to take a 71-48 lead going into the media timeout. 
 
Out of the timeout, layups from Wilson III and James and a three from Hunter cut the Ohio deficit to 73-57 with just under eight minutes to go. Out of the timeout, three points from senior guard Miles Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) and a layup from freshman forward Aidan Hadaway (Lafayette, Ga.) cut the Ohio deficit to 79-62 with 5:45 to go. After a Toledo three, James matched it with one of his own, followed by free throws and a dunk from Wilson III, cutting the Toledo lead to 84-69 going into the final media timeout. Out of the timeout, Ohio was able to cut the Toledo lead to 13, however, that was as close as they'd get, falling 90-75. 
 
For Toledo RayJ Dennis led the Rockets with 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while JT Shumate added 21 points. 
 
Up next, Ohio returns to Athens on Saturday, Jan. 21 when the Bobcats host Central Michigan. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
