ATHENS, Ohio –
The Ohio field hockey team (3-0) returned to action Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4), defeating Davidson (3-1), 1-0, at Pruitt Field.

Ohio's 3-0 start is the Bobcats' best start since 2011 when they started the season 6-0.

"We talked all week about how this this was going to be a really tight match," head coach Ali Johnstone said. "And then we talked about the pace. So we came off in the first quarter and I said, 'you feel the pace?' And they're like, 'we feel it.' So we took that pace and kicked it up a notch and show them that we can actually step up and play a little bit faster."

Overall, Davidson outshot Ohio, 11-8, while recording nine shots on goal to the Bobcats' six. However, the Bobcats recorded four corners to the Wildcats three. In net, Ohio registered. Nine saves to Davidson's five.

Individually, freshman Mijntje Ligtenberg recorded one goal with two shots, while freshman Anouk Plaehn (Lower Saxony, Germany) recorded two shots with two on goal. Senior Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) recorded one shot, as did senior Lucy Davis (Kettering, Ohio) and junior Maddie Coombe (Louisville, Ky.)

In net, graduate student Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) played all 60 minutes, recording the shutout and making nine saves.

The first half of the game saw both teams battling to a 0-0 tie going into the half. After the first 30 minutes, Davidson outshot Ohio 5-4, while both teams had four shots on goal. Ohio recorded three penalty corners compared to Davidson's two.

For Ohio Plaehn recorded two shots, while Coombe and Davis both had one.

The Bobcats struck halfway through the third quarter with Ligtenberg scoring her third goal of the season in the 36th minute, putting Ohio up 1-0 after three full quarters.

The Ohio defense held strong over the final 15 minutes, even withstanding the Wildcats pulling their keeper with three minutes to go. Ohio was able to keep the extra attacker at bay, sealing the 1-0 victory.

Ohio is back in action Sunday, Sept. 11 at Towson. First touch is set for Noon ET in Towson, Md.
